Zuri.com - VTOL airplane

Zuri.com - VTOL airplane Zuri is a Czech aircraft company building a long-range uncrewed cargo VTOL: helicopter access with fixed-wing range, hybrid-electric, remotely piloted.

It delivers 100+ kg of cargo, or deploys the sensors and communications a mission needs.

Nine years ago we set out to make regional flight work, for people and for goods. More than fifteen aircraft later, today we unveiled the first one we are building for someone else to fly.

The Zuri uncrewed cargo VTOL carries a hundred-plus kilograms, lands on a pad, a deck, or open ground, and refuels in minutes on ordinary fuel. No one is on board. One operator commands it from the ground and automation handles the flying.

It goes where a hundred-kilogram load has no good option today: out to an offshore platform, across to an island, past a road a flood took out, or in to a position where the risk is sending people.

It is built on Technology Demonstrator 2.0, the full-scale aircraft in ground test in our Prague workshop right now. First flight is planned for early 2027.

Every decision in this aircraft came out of flying, one aircraft at a time, not out of a whiteboard.

Michal Illich is eVTOL Insights' first CEO Feature.

Hybrid power rather than battery only. A real wing rather than a multicopter. Neither choice was where the headlines or the funding were going in 2017. Both are now industry consensus. We don't read that as vindication. We read it as an eight-year head start.

Also in the interview: why the sector wastes energy arguing over what to call these aircraft. "Nobody buys an aircraft, they buy a route."

The full August edition, including the Farnborough Airshow recap, is free to download from EVTOL Insights. Registration required.

We're looking for an Hardware Designer for our electronics development team in Prague.

Custom electronic circuits for a hybrid-electric VTOL aircraft, from schematic to bringing a prototype to life. Analog and digital electronics, power supply design, STM32, PCB design.

You don't need to know everything. You need to understand what you're designing.

Michal Illich has been founding companies since 1999.

A trip around the world with his family put a specific problem in front of him. Traffic that crawls. Airports that add hours at both ends. Routes and timetables set by somebody else.

He came home wanting an aircraft that could connect any two points. That became Zuri.

Some places the road does not reach. Others it reaches too late. And today, flying only helps if there is an airport at both ends.

That gap is why Michal Illich started Zuri, to build an aircraft that lifts off vertically, cruises on a wing, and runs on hybrid-electric power. Hundreds of kilometers, any two points, no airport required.

Daniel Majewski, a personal investor in Zuri, came back to Prague to see the second demonstrator take shape.

Final preparations for full-speed propeller testing. The rig is in our workshop now. Next it moves to an airfield, where the propellers get taken to full speed.

A look inside the workshop this week: one of our high-voltage battery packs on the test bench.

On a hybrid VTOL like ours, the battery isn't there to power the whole flight. Its job is to deliver a burst of extra power for the hardest moments, takeoff, landing, and the switch to forward flight, while the generator handles cruising. That's what lets us fly with a much smaller, lighter battery than an all-electric aircraft would need. It also means the pack has to be spot-on, so we test it until we know exactly how it behaves.

Not every day ends with a big breakthrough. A lot of engineering looks like this: careful, patient, repeatable testing. It's quiet work, and it's how you build something you can trust in the air.

Every cable in an aircraft has an exact length, an exact path and a connector at each end. Getting that right on a screen is not the same as getting it right in three dimensions.

So before any harness goes into flight hardware, our engineers route it on a plastic test frame. Simple to build, fast to change, and it catches problems while they still cost nothing.
