[Clean mobility] As decarbonization deadlines under the Clean Vehicle Directive and CO₂ Standards for Heavy Duty Vehicles approach, the time for bus fleet operators to choose a zero-emission path forward is now 🍃🌎

Will you opt for battery-electric or fuel cell electric technology? 🚌

Both options have their strengths and will be part of the overall solution. For instance, the latest JIVE report (July 2024) on “The Potential for Hydrogen Buses in Europe” reveals that 20% of European bus routes cannot be efficiently served by battery-electric buses.

Operational needs, such as driving range, shifts or climate conditions, will help define the best choice.

The experts from SympH₂ony, a joint venture between Messer and Toyota Tsusho Europe, share key factors to consider when evaluating zero-emission technologies, whether battery-electric or fuel cell electric buses.

True or false: The cost of recharging or refueling is generally lower for battery-electric buses than for fuel cell electric buses.

✅ This is true for small fleets (typically < 20 buses).

💡 However, according to a study published in 2021 by the Center for Transportation and The Environment, as a fleet grows, the charging infrastructure for battery-electric buses, among other things, becomes increasingly costly and complex, while hydrogen refueling infrastructure is easier and more cost-effective to expand, making fuel cell electric buses a better choice for larger fleets.

There is a night and day difference between battery-electric buses and fuel cell electric buses 🌚🌞

When charging battery-electric buses (BEBs) for several hours overnight, the grid power purchased doesn’t necessarily come from renewable sources. As a result, BEBs may be charged with a proportion of non-renewable or even fossil fuel based electricity ⚡

Fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs), however, use hydrogen that can be generated when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining. Electrolyzers are flexible production assets and can be operated to produce hydrogen when renewable power is available, ensuring a supply of both green and affordable electricity. Unlike electricity, hydrogen can be stored and used to quickly refuel vehicles as needed.

💡 Did you know that several EU Member States have long committed to transitioning their entire bus fleet to zero-emission by 2030?

Across Europe, cities are raising the bar, setting even more ambitious goals for zero-emission bus fleets. At least 8 cities, including Amsterdam and Copenhagen, plan to operate fully zero-emission bus fleets by 2025. This trend is expected to continue, as more cities aim for 100% zero-emission fleets or pledge to make significant emissions reductions. Naturally, every transition comes with challenges.

Are you heading in the same direction but need more insights and inspiration to choose the right zero-emission technology?

The experts from SympH₂ony, a joint venture between Messer and Toyota Tsusho Europe, are here to help you navigate these challenges and seize the opportunities offered by decarbonizing public transport 🍃🚌

📢 Exciting news in the hydrogen world

Messer has started trial operations of a hydrogen filling station on the premises of the H. Freund haulage company in Kerpen, Germany. Initially, it will supply hydrogen for two fuel-cell electric buses of Rhein-Erft-Verkehrsgesellschaft (REVG), later expanding to support a fleet of 26 buses. REVG plans to convert its entire vehicle fleet to emission-free drive technologies by 2030 🚌🍃

At Messer, we are actively contributing to the energy transition and the decarbonization of local public transport in Germany by implementing renewable hydrogen sources 📍

For the past 5 years, Messer has been operating a hydrogen production plant in Castrop-Rauxel, in North Rhine-Westphalia. In July 2024, the construction of another hydrogen production plant officially started in the region. Located in Jülich’s Brainergy Park, the plant will produce hydrogen by electrolysis and be operated by HyDN GmbH, a joint venture between Messer and the district of Düren. The green hydrogen plant is set to go into operation in the fall of 2025.
