In our newest project, GlobeDrought, we’ll be working on a global drought information system that looks at a drought's impact on water resources, crop productivity, food trade and the need for international food aid. This will also include an experimental early warning system that provides current drought information, ongoing drought monitoring, and future drought simulations.

GlobeDrought is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), as an integral part of their GROW („Global Ressource Water“) programme.

Peat mapping prize update:

The International Peat Mapping Team (IPMT) headed by RSS GmbH, qualified for the final round of the Indonesian Peat Prize. RSS GmbH presented the developed peat mapping approach to the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) in Jakarta. Of 44 initial participating teams, five proceeded to the final round.

The Indonesian Peat Prize is an ambitious, collaborative prize to find a new, more accurate, faster way of mapping extent and thickness of Indonesian peatlands, so that they can be managed for the benefit of all.

RSS provided data sets for the “IsViews” project, which designed an early warning system for sub-glacial volcanic eruptions. The resulting system is based on an extensive 3D model (seen in the video below) and the integration of both active and passive sensor products (e.g. TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X, LiDAR, RapidEye, Ultracam). The Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology funded this project.

Our satellite-based flood analysis for Sri Lanka (a.k.a. “VaeSSA”) is a great example of RSS GmbH’s ability to aid in climate risk mitigation. RSS GmbH modelled flood risk for the project by compiling maps (showcased in the video) from satellite imagery and using them to derive change analyses for Sri Lanka. Ultimately, the ESA-funded project aimed to reduce the impact flooding has on vulnerable people and improve the local government’s ability to respond effectively to natural disasters.

You can play with the results in a fun, interactive portal here: http://vaessa.nazka.be/vaessamap.html or find more information on VaeSSA here: www.vaessa.nazka.be

Special thanks go to nazka mapps for creating the interactive portal.
