The so-called Pacific Ring of Fire runs along the Kamchatka Peninsula, the richest in volcanoes and the most earthquake -prone area on Earth. Kamchatka is one of the most seismically active parts of the earth's crust in a number of ways.
Ancient people lived here in the Stone Age, despite the harsh climate. These were the ancestors of such peoples as the Koryaks, Itelmens and Ainu. Representatives of the first two of them still live here.
During Soviet times, the Kamchatka Peninsula was closed to foreigners because there were naval bases there. Moreover, even Soviet citizens needed to obtain special documents to visit it.
More than half of the population of Kamchatka lives in the largest city on the peninsula, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. This is one of the oldest Russian cities in the Far East , it was founded in 1740.
Contrary to popular belief, the climate on the peninsula is far from harsh everywhere. In the coastal zone, heat and frost records are about +30 °C and -30 °C, respectively, that is, the seasonal temperature drops here are lower than, for example, in Moscow. But away from the sea, winters are much more severe.
