“View of the New Brunswick Railroad Bridge” (c. 1856) by John Jesse Barker, an artist from our City, shows a Raritan River scene viewed from roughly where the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Museum, RU is situated today. In the foreground on the right you can see the Delaware and Raritan Canal, with the railroad bridge in the center, and Highland Park, NJ in the distance and on the left. The intersection of river commerce and rail commerce portrayed in this painting helped make us “The Hub City”. Painting in the Zimmerli collection.
