Steel rusts. Zinc-coated steel doesn't. Even when the surface is damaged.

That's not a marketing claim. It's electrochemistry: the zinc layer acts as a cathodic sacrificial anode, actively protecting the base material even at edges and cut surfaces.

As part of this year's series on surface treatments, today we want to talk about powder coating.

Powder coating is the standard solution for metal surfaces in industrial manufacturing. Electrically charged resin particles are electrostatically sprayed onto the part and cured at 160–200°C. No solvents. High material efficiency.

But the process is only as good as its pre-treatment. No phosphating specified? No mention of conversion coating for aluminium? No duplex system for outdoor applications?

This is the step many overlook in specifications and the one that causes most complaints in practice.

What engineers and procurement teams should know:
→ Steel requires phosphating — zinc phosphate is mandatory at C4/C5
→ Aluminium for facade applications: Qualicoat or GSB International are requirements, not recommendations
→ Zinc die casting: max. curing temperature 160°C — low-temperature powder is essential
→ TGIC-free powder is not optional in many industries — it's REACH-driven
→ Duplex system (hot-dip galvanizing + powder coating) per DIN EN 15773 for maximum outdoor protection

At FACTUREE, we offer heat treatment for metals and a wide variety of other materials. It is one of the 50+ surface treatments we provide, in addition to manufacturing processes and a broad range of materials.

That is why we understand that heat treatment alters the microstructure of the material itself. Whether it’s hardening, tempering, nitriding, or annealing. Only temperature, holding time, and cooling rate determine the result here.

For safety-critical components in the automotive, aerospace, mechanical engineering, and toolmaking industries, this can make all the difference.

We believe that designers, engineers, and buyers should therefore be aware of the following:
→ Steel with a carbon content of 0.3% or higher is hardenable
→ Case hardening and nitriding enable a hard surface layer with a tough core
→ Titanium and special alloys absolutely require inert gas or vacuum
→ Standards such as DIN EN 10052, AMS 2759, and NADCAP are not recommendations, but mandatory requirements for safety-critical components

Many design errors do not occur in the geometry, but in the heat treatment. Wrong process, wrong standard, wrong sequence. ‼️
