UCIMA (the Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association), in collaboration with Confindustria Assafrica & Mediterraneo, organised a conference (The African Market – How to Benefit from the African Potential) dedicated to the growth prospects of Made in Italy packaging on the African continent. africon was invited to speak on the topic “Opportunities for the packaging sector in African markets”.

Our Founder & CEO, Marc-Peter Zander, presented on the strong growth opportunities in Africa for Italian companies.

Some key takeaways:
✔️ Italy leads as the top supplier of packaging technologies to Africa, with 26% of total machinery sales.
✔️ Doing business in Africa requires solid market understanding as well as strong partners and networks.

Does Africa’s pharmaceutical manufacturing industry present opportunities for international companies? That was the central question in a recent project for one of our clients, a global healthcare firm.

Our findings.
✔️ Over 400 pharmaceutical manufacturers are active across the continent.
✔️ Four countries (Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, and Algeria) host significant manufacturing activity, accounting for the bulk of Africa’s pharmaceutical output.
✔️ Major global players such as Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Sanofi are already present in African markets, demonstrating confidence in the continent’s long-term potential.

What do emission standards look like across Africa?

This was one of the questions from our clients. As part of the project, we analysed regulatory frameworks related to industrial air pollution in Africa.
Our findings revealed clear front-runners like Morocco, South Africa, Rwanda, and Mauritius and markets with regulatory gaps and opportunities.

Did you know the majority of Egypt’s MedTech imports come from Germany?

We analysed Egypt's import landscape in our recent project for a leading European company. In 2023, most of Egypt’s MedTech imports came from Europe—primarily Germany and the Netherlands—followed by China and the U.S. However, economic challenges such as currency devaluation, inflation, and foreign exchange shortages have led to a decline in imports, increasing costs and limiting the procurement of medical equipment.

Despite these hurdles, the industry is projected to grow, and European companies are expected to remain dominant players in the market. Understanding these shifts is crucial for businesses looking to expand in Egypt.

Our insights and recommendations helped our client navigate these complexities and identify opportunities in Egypt.

We implemented an Africa strategy project for a large international pharmaceutical company, focusing on industry mapping and multi-country prioritization. As part of the project, we analyzed the vitamins and minerals segment within the broader OTC (Over-the-counter) market across pre-selected African countries.
Our research revealed that Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa lead the way as the top three markets for vitamins and minerals in Africa.
