Six years ago today, I made the decision to start my own business. 🎂

I still remember it so vividly. I sat in a café in Port Melbourne with my dear friend Rhonda (Thank you!), who helped me sort through the many confusing thoughts in my head as I navigated a significant transition in my life. With just one question, it all became clear to me, and I said it out loud for the first time:

"I want to start my own coaching and facilitation business".

And so, I started my business in Australia right after my maternity leave with my first son, building on a successful leadership career in the manufacturing industry.

6 years is a long time, and I feel proud that I'm still here, still on the exciting rollercoaster of self-employment.

I love the work I do and the impact it has.

I'm incredibly proud of the clients I get to work with, many of whom have become long-term partners, collaborators, and champions of positive work cultures and courageous leadership.
To all my 1:1 coaching clients and workshop clients, thank you for your trust.

Last year, I didn't acknowledge or celebrate this milestone. It kind of just got lost in the day-to-day.

But this year, I wanted to really take a moment to celebrate for myself. Because if I don't do it, nobody will.

So cheers to me, and I can't wait to see where the next 6 years take me and my business Lead Like YOU! by Anne Koopmann.

And yep, I absolutely bought myself a yummy strawberry cake from the bakery next door and posed in my backyard for a photo. 😆
Because moments like these matter.

This week, I am celebrating 4 years in my own business.

WOW!

I can't quite believe it has been four years since I decided to leave my leadership and engineering career to follow my passion for strength-based team development, leadership training, and coaching.

When I started, I honestly had no idea if this entrepreneurial life was for me. I did not know if I was any good at being self-employed :)
I gave it an initial 6 months to test it out and see if it would work. And, well, here I am 4 years later, and the biz is thriving.

It has been a wonderful and sometimes also unnerving rollercoaster. I have learned so much about myself and have grown as a person. And, let me tell you, I have also learned a lot about marketing, webpage design, social media management, business development, stakeholder management, sales, finance etc...

And every year in business came with its own challenge.

Year 1-2: Covid! It came with a sudden stop to all corporate client work and then a massive shift into the virtual facilitation space.

Year 2-3: I welcomed my second baby, navigated a short maternity leave, and managed my work and family life with a baby and toddler.

Year 3-4: an international move for our family back to Germany after 11 years in Australia. It came with many thoughts and worries about how well I could establish my business in a new market, plus the additional logistics and emotions of resettling our family of 4.

Life as a solopreneur and juggling 2 little kids is challenging from time to time but also incredibly rewarding, and it brings me so much joy. I couldn't imagine doing anything else.

I absolutely love the work I do and the impact I can create.
And I believe in my vision of creating more human-centered work cultures and helping everyone be seen for their strengths.

Over these past 11 months back in Germany, I have already built the most wonderful client base working with leaders and teams from big global corporations to tech start-ups and non for profit organisations.

Thank you all for trusting me and for bringing me so much joy.

Year 5, here I come!

How do you want to feel this week?

This week, I decided to begin my week with an exercise I sometimes use during my team workshops and 1:1 coaching sessions.

I have got a busy week ahead with some big deadlines, preparing for my trip to berlin next week, medical appointments, family commitments etc.
As I sat down this morning to organise the week, I started to feel a little overwhelmed.

So, I decided to take a deep breath and think about how I needed to feel to make this week a success.

And what jumped out to me was "at ease". I want to feel at ease as I navigate the tasks this week.

And now, I can be more intentional in bringing more of that feeling into my day to day. I already feel much better.
And whenever I feel a bit overwhelmed throughout the week, I want to return to this feeling.

Give it a try.

How do you need to feel this week to make it a success?

PS: I used my Emotional Culture Deck by , but you can easily do it without any cards and think about which emotion comes to mind.

I want to take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful festive season and end-of-year break.

Thank you so much for being a part of the Lead Like YOU! community.
It is great to have you here.

2022 has been a big year of change and growth for myself and my family. In July, we moved back to Germany after 11 years in Australia. The past five months have been chaotic, and we still feel homesick for Melbourne from time to time.

But looking back now, sitting in our new home and closing my work tasks for the year, I feel really proud of how we managed it all. The kids have adapted to the new life like absolute champions, and we love spending more time with our families. Coming home feels good.

And I am also so very excited that I get to continue the work with my business here in Germany and Europe. I am very passionate about creating change in our work cultures and leaders.
I have already been part of some exciting projects for impactful organisations and leaders. I can't wait for what's to come in 2023.

This year has still felt quite challenging for many. The working world has changed a lot, and the demands on ourselves and our teams have increased. On top of it all, most people still feel the emotional effect these past years have had on us.
The individuals and teams I have worked with have one thing in common: They crave more emotional connection and better relationships at work, especially in a hybrid setting.

May 2023 be the year we all get to focus on the human connection at work and the individuals we communicate and collaborate with. Empathy and emotional intelligence will be even more critical for leaders going forward.

I am looking forward to continuing this journey with you all.

I wish you a wonderful festive season with your loved ones.

This week I had the absolute honour of travelling to City in Copenhagen to deliver a workshop to one of the teams on "Emotional Intelligence in A Hybrid Work Environment."

We have had some powerful conversations on how Emotional Intelligence can have a big impact on how we communicate and collaborate successfully in a hybrid team. This was just the beginning. And the team is committed to growing even more in 2023.

From my work, I know that many teams still feel disconnected in a hybrid environment.

And that is because a hybrid work environment comes with many challenges that most teams face.

They face challenges like:

• Transparent and effective communication
• Inequality between hybrid and non-hybrid employees or employees across different locations
• Building relationships & trust
• Collaboration and managing priorities
• Creating a positive team culture
• Inclusion of every employee and also onboarding of new team members
• Work-life balance, resilience, wellbeing
• etc

And probably the most important thing to realise is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to making hybrid teams work.

It is difficult!

Every team is so unique, starting from the work they do, the set-up of their team, the strengths of the team, the location of the team members, the logistical challenges....the list goes on.

What it takes is a commitment and courage to figure it out, communicate openly, be vulnerable, have difficult conversations, take responsibility for how we show up and review what works best on a regular basis.

What are your biggest challenges when it comes to a hybrid work environment?

Leadership requires a whole lot of courage.

Courage to

❤️put your hand up to lead a team of humans

❤️make decisions about the right person to hire

❤️sometimes let a person go

❤️provide feedback and have those tough conversations

❤️take risks and be innovative

❤️get it wrong sometimes

❤️make decisions, often without having all the information

❤️speak up and challenge the status quo and opinions of more senior leaders

❤️set boundaries and hold them

❤️stick to your values and do what is right and not what is wrong

If we want to be leaders who create a safe environment for everyone, change the status quo, and create a better working world for all, we must develop the courage to be seen, even if we can't control the outcome.

There might always be a little fear, but we can develop strategies to take the step despite that fear and emotional exposure.

Yesterday, I had the absolute pleasure of running a session for the .internationale.hochschule as part of their Leadership Lab Speaker series.

We talked about strategies to be bold and courageous enough to take little steps out of our comfort zone.

Thank you so much for inviting me to speak

Oh, the emotions of saying goodbye...

We have had so many goodbyes these past few weeks. So so many tears.

Goodbyes from our friends, our family away from home.
Goodbyes from our work, colleagues and clients.
Goodbyes from the kids' daycare.
Goodbyes from our beautiful house close to the beach.
Goodbyes from our beautiful beach.
Goodbyes from our favourite cafe.
Goodbyes from our day-to-day routine.
Goodbyes from our life in this beautiful part of the world.

Tomorrow, we will board a plane to move across the globe back to Germany. The country I left behind over 11 years ago.

Saying goodbye to this place and the people we met is so unbelievably hard and sad.
But this little quote helps to shift our perspective a little bit. (Thank you Sarina for sharing it with me)

And how truly lucky are we?!
So so so lucky for our wonderful years in this beautiful country that will forever be our home away from home.

I feel so grateful for these past 10.5 years in this country. I feel like I truly found myself and became a woman I love.
I was 27 when I moved here and now leaving as a 38-year-old mother of two boys, a business owner, and with so many lifelong friendships in my heart.

Australia, you will always have our hearts, and we will be back! This is not a goodbye forever.

For now, it's time to create some memories with the kids and our families in Germany and explore all Europe has to offer.

GOODBYE

Did you know about my award-winning program?

Ïn 2020 I was named Most Innovative Engineer by Australia for my "Strengths in Diversity Program" that combines the use of the CliftonStrengths Assessment with the Lego Serious Play methodology.

I came up with the idea for this program through my work in the STEM sector after finding that many participants were uncomfortable with being vulnerable in a traditional training environment.

I believe that diversity in STEM means cultivating talent and promoting the full inclusion of excellence across the entire spectrum of society. My vision is to drive team performance and innovation through an appreciation of the power of diversity.

The program uses Gallup's CliftonStrengths Assessment as a way of providing participants with a deep understanding of their natural talents and then develops strategies for the team to collaborate based on their strengths.

In addition, Lego Serious Play is a facilitation tool that sparks curiosity and engagement and helps every participant to open up and build trust with their team.

The bricks are used as a medium to express complex ideas through building, storytelling and metaphors, making it easier to speak up about even difficult issues. It sparks curiosity and engages technical employees to open up. This is particularly engaging for technical employees and invites contribution by everyone.

This program's vision is to change how we develop our leaders and teams. I want to drive diversity by helping individuals learn to appreciate the strengths of others and foster a diverse culture that drives innovation.

If you are in Europe and would like to discuss how I can support you and your team, send me a dm.

The things I have learned from my many international moves...

The first time I moved by myself was at the age of 19 to go to university in a different city in Germany. Not international, but it set me up for all the other moves I would do in my life.

Since then, I have lived and worked in Germany, Canada, USA and Australia.

I moved to all these places by myself; sometimes I knew 1 or 2 people, sometimes I did not.

It has not always been easy to feel settled, make friends and build a life. But it always has been rewarding, and I have memories that I will cherish for a lifetime.

In a few weeks, I will relocate from Australia back to Germany after being abroad for 11 years.

This time I'm moving with my husband and two little kids.

Whilst this process is a little daunting and overwhelming, I know it'll make us grow and reward us with great new experiences.

These past few weeks have made me reflect and think about the last decade of my life and what I have learned from living abroad.

Here is a little list of the things I have learned:

🌍You learn to leave your comfort zone
🌍You develop new skills
🌍You learn to speak new languages fluently even
🌍You learn to ask for help
🌍You will miss family and old friends a lot
🌍You meet new friends, and some become your family away from home
🌍Having an accent is a brilliant ice breaker
🌍You become more open-minded and challenge your bias
🌍You learn to enjoy being by yourself
🌍You develop your resilience and problem-solving skills
🌍You develop a growth mindset
🌍Change is good

Have you moved abroad?

What have you learned? Tell me below!

Big news for this family: We are moving.

After ten years of calling beautiful Australia our home, we have decided to move back to Germany.

It was not an easy decision to make as we love our life here. But these past years have really changed our perspective on life.

Throughout the pandemic, Australia had its borders shut, and we haven't been able to travel back to Germany to see our families for 3.5 years now.
Stuck in the world's longest lockdown and not being able to see any family was tough. And it also meant that our families missed out on getting to know our little boys (almost 4 and 1).
So, for now, we decided that it is time to make some memories in Germany and Europe.

In 4 weeks we will be saying a big emotional goodbye to this amazing country - for now at least :)
Australia will always be our second home, and we will hold these precious memories forever.

What does this mean for Lead Like YOU! and your ability to work with me?

I will move my wonderful business & coaching practice with me from Australia to Germany, and I am so excited to continue to work with the most amazing clients worldwide and, of course, in Germany & Europe.

I am taking a break from active client work for the months of June, July & August. I will open my books for dates from September onwards.

If you would love to discuss how I can support you, your organisation, teams or leaders, send me a dm or email to [email protected], and let's have a chat.

Thank you all for your continuous support over these years!
The warmest thank you to all my colleagues and clients that have made my time in Australia so memorable.
