Hybrid teams run a risk to form in-group (in the office) and out-groups (remote) which can negatively impact team cohesion and in turn team effectiveness. To overcome the disconnect across different work environments, try setting up a buddy system that pairs remote and live team members. The buddies then regularly check in to make sure that the informal and formal information flow is working well.

In our TeamMind trainings, we encourage team members to map the connection to other team members. This could even be done as a before (the pandemic) and after (now) to make the changes more visible. Teams can use this exercise to start a discussion about connection and to make space to allow team members reaching out to each other. They often do use the opportunity and form new connections.

These are data from our ConnectedMINDs participants before and after a month-long sprint of daily meditation practice. Many join almost daily and really manage to establish a regular practice - sometimes for the first time in years.

Our data shows that emotions shift not just from negative to positive but more specifically from high energy negative emotions to calm positive emotions.

Mindfulness practice promotes calm positive emotions and that in turn can cause an upward spiral, with more positive emotions allowing people to become more resilient and stress-resistant. We cultivate an appreciation of our own body and mind and can get out of the cycle of constant excitement.

Like individuals, teams are often primed to focus on the problems. Establishing habits like this gratitude practice on a team level can change the team climate. For example, 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐧 really change the energy in the room. Starting a day with an email of appreciation can change the course of the day for both the recipient and the sender. Allowing everyone to share a highlight increases the sense of accomplishment and sets everybody at greater ease. Becoming aware of our negativity bias can help keeping it in check and refocus our view to the things that we appreciate about each other. The faster our outer world seems to become, the more it helps to 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝. In this mindfulness retreat we spend time meditating and 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 of mindfulness.
