🌐Insights from the Circular Economy Webinar 💼🌐
As the global chair for the Circular Economy at G100, dedicated to advancing gender equity globally, I share in this article some reflections on the profound insights unveiled during our recent webinar held on March 7, in celebration of International Women's Day. This first event convened major stakeholders from the European Union and India to explore the transition towards a more circular and climate-smart economy, while also spotlighting innovative solutions to promote women's entrepreneurship within the circular eco-system. This webinar marked a significant milestone as the first global gathering to highlight diverse country positions and good practices, featuring esteemed leaders from industries and government sectors engaging in dialogue with women experts from the Circular Economy Global Women Leader Alliance (G100: Mission Million) and over 100 guests from all over the world.
The transition from linear to circular economy models represents a cornerstone in our collective pursuit of a regenerative future. India and Europe, with their economic stature and influence, play pivotal roles in shaping this transformative journey. India's population exceeding 1.4 billion and Europe's GDP surpassing €16 trillion underscore the magnitude of their impact on global sustainability.
Recent global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, have highlighted risks to global supply chains and the need for resource security. The European Union (EU) has recognized the importance of circular economy (CE) initiatives in addressing these challenges. The objectives of the Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP) focus on making sustainable products the norm, reducing waste, empowering consumers, and leading global efforts on circular economy.
Key Points:
Changing Global Context: The COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have exposed vulnerabilities in global supply chains, contributing to a cost of living crisis and increasing inflation globally.
Recognition of Circularity Benefits: EU policymakers are increasingly acknowledging the environmental, resource efficiency, and climate benefits of transitioning to a circular economy. Recent initiatives highlight the role of circularity in post-Covid recovery and enhancing resource security and resilience.
Resource Security and Resilience: The CEAP emphasizes the need for countries to secure their supplies of key resources and raw materials, including by reducing consumption, increasing resource efficiency, and promoting domestic sources.
EU Industrial Strategy and Green Deal: The EU's Industrial Strategy and Green Deal underscore the importance of maintaining the security of supply, resilience, and competitiveness through diversifying supply sources and strengthening resource efficiency.
Critical Raw Materials Resilience: The EU's Critical Raw Materials Resilience communication emphasizes diversified supply sources, reduced dependencies, and greater resource efficiency and circularity to enhance strategic autonomy.
Evolution of Circular Economy Concept: The EU's approach to the circular economy has evolved beyond waste management to prioritize reducing and reusing products. However, there is still a need for greater emphasis on the absolute reduction of resource consumption.
The EU's circular economy initiatives are evolving in response to changing global dynamics, emphasizing the importance of resource security, resilience, and sustainability. As the EU continues to advance its circular economy agenda, addressing challenges and seizing opportunities will be crucial for achieving a full transition to a circular economy and ensuring a sustainable future.
📊 In India, where the renewable energy sector has experienced a remarkable 300% growth in the past decade, the circular economy presents a unique opportunity to address environmental challenges while fostering economic growth. Europe, contributing over 22% of the global GDP, champions circular economy development through initiatives like the European Green Deal, spearheading efforts to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and waste.
🙏 As a global citizen with German and French roots and having immersed myself in various regions of India, I recognize the immense opportunity to explore key perspectives and best practices while nurturing cultural awareness.
The webinar, organized and moderated by distinguished country and state chair of the Greater Region of Delhi, India, Sanchita Gairola Mishra, underscored the central role of gender equity in driving inclusive circular initiatives and global collaborations.
Speakers from diverse backgrounds shared invaluable insights with a focus on urban development and construction:
📊In India, urbanization has surged dramatically, with over 4000 cities and a significant increase in large cities, including 53 with populations exceeding one million. While urban growth presents opportunities, it also brings challenges. The development of physical, institutional, social, and economic infrastructure is crucial to sustain this growth. However, basic urban services like water supply, sewerage, waste management, and public transport have to be taken into consideration. Additionally, land and housing supply haven't matched population growth. The challenge lies in ensuring service delivery at enhanced decent standards while adhering to the UN's 2030 development agenda, emphasizing sustainable cities for inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable human settlements.
🎙️ Mr. Gurjeet Singh Dhillon Director at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, highlighted the importance of aligning national strategies with circular principles to foster economic growth while minimizing environmental impact.
"In our circular economy endeavors, we prioritize aligning national strategies with circular principles. Through collaborative efforts and innovative initiatives, we aim to foster economic growth while minimizing environmental impact and promoting resource efficiency."
🎙️ Dr. Kiran Rajashekariah Senior Advisor in Sustainable Urban Development at GIZ India, emphasized the complexities and challenges of integrating circular economy principles into urban planning, emphasizing the need for inclusive, resilient, and environmentally conscious urban landscapes.
"Having witnessed the complexities and challenges of integrating circular economy principles into urban planning, our focus remains on identifying obstacles and paving the way forward for sustainable urban development. By addressing these challenges head-on and fostering partnerships, we strive to create inclusive, resilient, and environmentally conscious urban landscapes."
🎙️ Mr. Pankaj Satija EIC of Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division of Tata Steel, underscored the commitment to circularity ingrained in Tata Steel's operations, prioritizing resource efficiency and sustainable practices.
"Our commitment to circularity is ingrained in our operations, where we prioritize resource efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable practices. Despite challenges, we remain steadfast in our pursuit of a circular economy, creating value for our stakeholders while minimizing our environmental footprint."
🎙️ Ms. Linnéa Engström, Sweden Country Chair of the Circular Economy G100: Mission Million, highlighted the imperative for a gender-equal green economy and the necessity to transition from the traditional "extract, use, throw away" model to conserve and sustain resource values.
These insightful discussions exemplify the power of collaboration and inclusivity in driving circular innovation, resilience, and sustainability on a global scale. we will continue this transformative journey.
"Embracing circular economy principles isn't just about sustainability; it's about securing our future in an ever-changing global landscape. As we navigate challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions, prioritizing resource security and resilience becomes paramount. Let's lead the change towards a circular economy, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for all." (Anja Carron)
