Behind the scenes at Lempertz Cologne.

Our house is in constant motion as the new season begins to take shape. Artworks are arriving, being examined and catalogued, while our Experts prepare and travel for the current Appraisal Days. Across the headquarters, the first outlines of the autumn sales are emerging, gradually bringing together a season of works, ideas and encounters.

This is a moment of transition, when much is still in progress and possibilities are taking shape. For collectors, it is also an opportunity to consign their works at the the seasonal auction offer and to create new success stories with Lempertz. We’re looking forward to having a great season with you!

The Von der Heydt-Museum Wuppertal is enriching its permanent collection with Gerhard Richter’s painting “Vorhang” (Curtain). Created in 1965, it belongs to a group of about a dozen works from an early phase of the former Düsseldorf Art Academy professor’s career, whose works today command of the highest prices of any living artist. The curtain motif originally served merely as the background for a portrait Richter painted of his gallerist, Alfred Schmela.
The fascination with structures drawn from everyday life - characterized by rounded forms and strong chiaroscuro contrasts - persists beyond Richter’s initial curtain paintings into other series, in which the artist explores corrugated iron, bundles of tubes, and folded-over page corners.
The museum is now able to exhibit the painting as a long-term loan from the Brennscheidt Foundation, an organization that has consistently championed culture in Wuppertal for decades. To secure “Vorhang” against determined rival bidders at the Lempertz „Evening Sale“ during the autumn season before last, the foundation had to demonstrate significant resolve: the winning bid was double the estimated value.

Lempertz to auction the collection of an important cultural institution

The Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft im BDI e.V. will be parting with its collection, which includes numerous works on permanent loan to various museums. The institution has commissioned Lempertz auction house to handle the sale. Significant pieces from the collection will already be offered at auction during the forthcoming autumn season.
