This still life is simple and elegant. Fede Galizia shows the basket of peaches and jasmine blossoms in close-up and in strict frontality. The composition is clear and the background neutral; the artist forgoes a pictorial space developed through perspective, as well as any elaborate staging or dramatic lighting. Fede Galizia, one of the most significant women artists of the Italian early Baroque, worked in Milan, and this still life clearly stands in the tradition of Lombard realism. Caravaggio's famous basket of fruit, which was already in the possession of Cardinal Federico Borromeo in Milan around 1600, is likely to have served as an inspiration. She was also shaped by painting north of the Alps, above all Flemish painting, notably that of Jan Brueghel the Elder, who worked for that same Federico Borromeo in the 1590s. Galizia's basket of fruit thus unites two great European traditions of still-life painting at the beginning of the 17th century.
