As part of our Healthcare theme month, we’re turning our attention to a place behind the scenes of healthcare: the workplace of a healthcare technology company in Boston.

Fusion Design has created a working environment where open-plan offices, communal areas and meeting rooms come together. Lighting plays a particularly important role in shaping these spaces.

Above the open workstations, the curved light lines of our Liquid Line PX flow through the space. Their soft forms contrast with the straight arrangement of desks and the exposed ceiling services. They help structure the working areas while bringing a sense of movement to the open-plan office.

The Liquid Line PX also features above the long counter in the communal area. Here, its linear form follows the geometry of the furnishings, reinforcing the spatial organisation.

In the meeting room, our Matric GX takes on a different role. Integrated into the timber slatted ceiling, it follows the architectural grid and becomes part of the ceiling structure.

Two luminaire systems, different lighting compositions and one shared design approach: lighting responds to the architecture and the specific purpose of each space.

The project illustrates how lighting can shape contemporary working environments – including the places where new ideas for the future of healthcare take shape.

Our Lightnet UX Configurator is officially out of beta and we’re excited to introduce the new Project Cart feature!

With the Project Cart, planning lighting solutions becomes even more structured and efficient. Projects can be organized by floors and rooms, allowing users to clearly assign and manage different lighting configurations within a project. This makes it easier to keep track of complex planning tasks and simplifies the journey from the initial concept to the final order.

In October, we’re focusing on healthcare – and on another project that shows just how differently light can be used in healthcare environments.

This time, we’re heading to Rorschacherberg in Switzerland. At the local healthcare centre, Praxisarchitekten have created an interior that moves away from the typical restraint of medical environments. Dark green meets rosé, light wood and burgundy. These bold areas of colour are particularly prominent in the reception and waiting areas, while the white ceilings provide a calm counterpoint.

The lighting follows the same principle. Our Swiss partner Mabalux was responsible for the lighting design and distribution, choosing our Basic X5 for the project. The circular surface-mounted luminaires are quietly arranged across the ceiling, without competing with the colourful interior. Their clear geometry contrasts with the lines of the staircase, railings and built-in elements, while their circular shape picks up on the softer forms of the furnishings.

The Basic X5 is not limited to a single area. From reception and waiting areas to circulation zones and treatment rooms, it remains a recurring element throughout the project. While materials, colours and spatial requirements change, its form provides a sense of continuity.

This becomes particularly apparent in the treatment rooms. Here, the bold colours give way to lighter surfaces, wood and warm textiles – while the Basic X5 remains. The result is a consistent design language across very different spaces, without making every room look the same.

Colour can stand out. Light doesn’t always have to.

In October, we’re taking a closer look at how light supports spaces in healthcare. We’re starting with the children’s clinic at St. Marienkrankenhaus in Ludwigshafen.

A stay in hospital doesn’t begin in the treatment room. It begins at the door. At reception. In the waiting area. And in the corridors in between.

In the extension designed by a|sh architekten, the circular form of Ringo Star A2 contrasts with the straight lines of the architecture. Different diameters create a more relaxed ceiling composition, turning the lighting itself into a design element. This becomes most apparent in the children’s clinic waiting area. Blue defines the floor and ceiling, while planets orbit the sun across the wall. Among them, the rings fit almost naturally into this world of orbits.

Our Education Month continues. This time with a school where moving forward didn’t mean starting from scratch.

Schulzentrum Liebigstraße in Holzminden, a school complex dating from the 1960s and 70s, was extensively refurbished and reorganised internally by BKS Architekten. The existing structure became the starting point for the new learning environment.

Previously dark interior areas were opened up, existing light wells were extended down to the ground floor, and a generous new stairwell was added at the heart of the building. New sightlines, learning islands and communication areas create additional spaces for learning beyond the classroom.

And the lighting? It changes with the spaces.

In the classrooms, Matric F3 provides precise light for reading, writing and focused work. Its linear form fits naturally into the clear architecture without pushing itself into the foreground.

In the stairwell, Matric A1 accompanies the open vertical circulation while keeping views across several levels unobstructed.

And then there’s the canteen. The existing load-bearing structure has been exposed once again and now defines the space. Liquid Line G3 runs freely through the ceiling grid, creating a graphic accent of its own.

When people think of educational spaces, classrooms often spring to mind. Desks, chairs and a board at the front. But that’s just one room among many.

There are also libraries, workshops, lecture theatres and open learning spaces. Some have a clear front; others don’t need one at all. You might sit in rows, around a table, on steps or somewhere in between. Your attention shifts from a book to the board, a screen or the person opposite.

And above it all is light. It could be a line, a surface, a single luminaire or even part of the ceiling. Sometimes it catches your eye straight away. Sometimes only on a second look.

There’s quite a lot of space for one little word: education.
