Plastics Hall Of Fame Honoring the men and women around the world who have made major contributions to shape the direction and future of the plastics industry.

The Plastics Hall of Fame was founded in 1972 by Editor-in-Chief Sid Gross in cooperation between Modern Plastics Magazine and Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI), now Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS). Separate ceremonies for living and posthumous inductees are held every three years. The Plastics Academy administers the Hall of Fame and memorializes the industry tradition through honor

ing outstanding individuals by inducting them into the Plastics Hall of Fame. Its Board of Directors serves as the screening committee for the nominations, which are then sent to the living Hall of Fame members for their selection of the inductees. In 1988, the Plastics Hall of Fame was endorsed by PLASTICS (formerly SPI), as well as the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), the Plastics Pioneers Association and the National Plastics Center. The American Plastics Council followed suit in 1999. Membership in the Plastics Hall of Fame is a select and exclusive honor. It is bestowed by a selection committee upon individuals who, in its judgment, were primarily responsible for raising the field of plastics to one of the major industries. Election to the Plastics Hall of Fame is a crowning achievement of any life spent in the plastics industry.

The Plastics Hall of Fame is proud to announce Evan Porter as the recipient of the Jay Gardiner Plastics Hall of Fame Scholarship!

A student in the Plastics Engineering Technology program at Ferris State University, Evan has distinguished himself through leadership, technical achievement, and a strong commitment to the plastics industry.

As Vice President Technical of the Ferris State SPE Student Chapter, Evan helps connect students with industry opportunities and encourages his peers to pursue careers in plastics. He has also gained hands-on experience in plastics manufacturing and processing, contributing to process improvements, equipment optimization, and product development. His industry involvement includes representing Ferris State at K 2025 in Germany, volunteering at SPE events, and serving his community.

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle on August 14 featured the hint “Discovered by accident". If you haven’t solved it yet, spoiler alert: one of the seven answers was “plastic"!

And fittingly, the history of plastics has numerous examples of discoveries that happened by accident.

➡ Leo Baekeland was searching for an alternative to shellac, an expensive resin made from beetles. By accident, he discovered Bakelite, the world’s first fully synthetic plastic; a heat-resistant, moldable material that could be formed into countless shapes and was used in products ranging from radios and telephones to electrical components.

➡ Roy Plunkett was working on a new refrigerant when he discovered a white, waxy residue left behind after a gas froze inside a storage container. The material was chemically inert, nonstick and heat resistant. Today, we know it as Teflon.

➡ Stephanie Kwolek was searching for a lightweight material for tire cords during the 1960s. An unusual compound caught her attention, and after having it spun into fibers, she discovered a material that was incredibly strong yet lightweight. We know it today as Kevlar.

All three of these innovators, and their remarkable discoveries, are part of the Plastics Hall of Fame.

The Plastics Hall of Fame is proud to announce Melanie Butenhoff as the recipient of a Dow STEM Scholarship!

A Materials Science and Engineering student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Melanie combines academic excellence with leadership and a passion for polymer materials. She is active in AIChE, SWE, ACS, and Material Advantage, while also serving as a College of Science and Engineering Peer Mentor.

She is also helping build the future of the plastics industry. Recognizing the need for a plastics-focused organization on campus, Melanie is leading the effort to establish a Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) student chapter at the University of Minnesota—creating opportunities for students to explore polymer science, sustainability, innovation, and the important role plastics play in modern society.

Her industry experience includes an internship with RTP Company, where she worked with polymer characterization and led an independent project focused on fiber length analysis for glass fiber-reinforced polymers. She will continue with RTP in a research and development role.

Congratulations to William Quintana, recipient of a Dow STEM Scholarship from the Plastics Hall of Fame!

Currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Virginia Tech, William has distinguished himself through exceptional leadership, research, and service to the polymer community. As President of the university’s Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter, he has expanded professional development opportunities, led STEM outreach programs that introduce young students to polymer science through hands-on demonstrations, organized environmental cleanup initiatives, and secured funding to help fellow students present their research at ANTEC.

William’s research focuses on developing fully thermoplastic, recyclable composite materials for advanced applications, including wind turbine blades and next-generation manufacturing technologies. His work combines innovation in sustainable polymers, advanced composites, additive manufacturing, and materials characterization to help shape a more sustainable future for plastics.

A graduate of the University of Delaware. William has earned numerous honors recognizing his academic excellence and research achievements, including the inaugural Materials Science Academic Achievement Award, the Cunningham Fellowship, the Virginia Space Grant Consortium Fellowship, and multiple national travel awards supporting presentations of his research.

The Plastics Hall of Fame is proud to recognize William’s outstanding accomplishments, leadership, and commitment to advancing polymer science while inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists.
