Some of us spend the long Easter weekend visiting museums with family and friends. One of our favorites: the Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf — open today and tomorrow.
Current exhibition: MAMA—FROM MARY TO MERKEL
🙂🐣🐰

To dive deeper into the museum’s vision and curatorial approach, we recommend our conversation with Dr. Felix Krämer, Director General and Artistic Director of the Kunstpalast, featured in Wunderkammer—Innovation and the Arts.

In a time when digital experiences and virtual realities are gaining ground, what makes the physical museum experience still relevant? Sepideh Honarbacht asked him just that. They talked about the power of standing before a real work of art, about the role of museums in society — and what the future may hold.

This is the first in a series of conversations in the Wunderkammer Art Salon.

The Sunday Read
During the last months activists of .stopoil and have attacked oil paintings in museums with , or stuck themselves to their frames with superglue. While we support the activists‘ goals we disagree with their measures. In her opinion piece published in Wunderkammer — Innovation and the Arts explains why throwing food at art is stupid. And suggests five areas activists should focus on instead.

Do you believe in the power of imagination? If so, don't miss the Biennale di Venezia, on view through November 27. "The Milk of Dreams" is masterfully curated by , a great storyteller. She has taken a book by surrealist Leonora Carrington as a starting point for the conception of the 59th art presentation in the lagoon city, creating a cosmos that links past, present and future, juxtaposing works by contemporary artists with those by well-known masters. In doing so, she manages to sensitize visitors to great themes of our time, such as the search for identity, the relationship between humans and machines, and also between man and the environment, without accusing or making visitors feel guilty. Strolling through Griardini and Arsenale, one moves as if intoxicated by a dream world of spatial installations, paintings, sculptures and audiovisual works, in which reality keeps flashing. The experience inspires reflection and discussion with friends.

7 Deaths of Maria Callas
With this project, performance artist and drama queen Marina Abramović has realized a wish of her heart. She loves opera and Maria Callas in particular. The production is not essential for opera fans, but it is a must-see for fans of Marina Abramović. We revere her as one of the greatest living artists in the world. Some time ago we saw her opera production at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. The artist was present—90 percent of the time lying motionless in a huge bed on stage. Seven sopranos performed the arias that made Maria Callas unforgettable. Aesthetic films showing tragic heroines run in the background: Desdemona is strangled by Otello, Carmen is first tied up, then stabbed by Don José, Lucia dies in madness, Norma goes into the fire. The scenes in the films are played by Marina Abramović herself, her counterpart is actor Willem Dafoe. At the very end, for the eighth death, Marina Abramović finally rises, strides through the imagined bedroom of Maria Callas, in the avenue George-Mandel No. 36 in Paris. Dramatic sentences spoken by Willem Dafoe can be heared. For the thunderous farewell applause after the eighth death on stage, that of Maria Callas, Abramović wears a gold tight-fitting palleted gown. She looks like the reincarnation of the greatest diva of all time, who died of a broken heart, they say.

The book accompanying the project is appropriately bound in red cloth, embossed with gold letters and contains the text written by Abramović and Petter Skavlan. The making-of was photographed by Marco Anelli. The book has been published by in 2020.

We did some research: Marina Abramović's production „7 Deaths of Maria Callas“ will be shown in Barcelona in March 2023. We hope you‘ll enjoy making travel plans this weekend.

It can be dumped – but it is still art
Why Documenta Fifteen is worth a visit, in spite of everything

was curious, but also skeptical, when she learned an Indonesian artists collective known as Ruangrupa would curate this summer’s Documenta 15 in the western German city of Kassel. It is the first time that the curator is not a single individual. With the show halfway over (it concludes Sept. 25), one thing is certain: that experiment has failed. Still, the Documenta is a key event for the world of contemporary art, and worth seeing if you get a chance.

Despite the negative press in recent days, you have to see . Why? Because there has never been a documenta like it. Five characteristics: 1. For the first time, a collective has curated the exhibition. 2. the focus is deliberately on the global south; the list of contributors illustrates the inclusive approach of the artistic directors, the Indonesian collective ruangrupa. 3. "established artists" are not exhibited. 4. documenta is not static, the contributions of the artists are meant to change. 5. the artists are present on site, interacting with the visitors in workshops, talks and performances.

The guiding theme of documenta fifteen is lumbung, the Indonesian expression for a communal rice barn with characteristic values such as community, sharing of resources and collaboration. A positive effect of this concept is that we are forced to change our perspective, which is shaped by the Western sense of art and aesthetics. The downside is a lack of conceptual clarity, levels of craftsmanship vary widely. However, documenta fifteen achieves its goal of providing impulses and stimulating discourse.
