September Auction | A Celebration of Art, Craft and Collecting

Dear Collector,

As summer gives way to autumn, we invite you to enter a world shaped by beauty, rarity and the enduring art of collecting.

Our September auction brings together an exceptional selection of jewellery, decorative arts, musical instruments and European painting. Spanning centuries and traditions, each work reflects the vision of its maker and the discerning eye of those who have treasured it.

The auction opens with magnificent jewellery, where exceptional gemstones take centre stage. Highlights include a Santa Maria aquamarines, Paraíba tourmalines, diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds from some of the best mines and ateliers in the world. Spectacular Tutti Frutti jewels and 19th century medallions are complemented by distinguished timepieces, including an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph and Urwerk UR-120.

We then turn to the refined world of the European interior, with works from celebrated workshops and manufactories. Highlights include a bookcase by Henry van de Velde, an important mirror by Dagobert Peche and an exquisite Herend and Meissen porcelain selection.

The world of historic musical instruments follows. Highlights include violins by Martin Schleske, Michael Straub and Stefano Scarampella.

Our selection of 19th-century painting focuses this time on the human figure through anatomy, movement with the woman at the center. This is complemented by intimate portraits of childhood. Highlights include works by Monjé and Alexandre-Hippolyte Charles.

We conclude with Old Masters and enduring traditions of European art, featuring a ceremonial Prunkschild by Hans Zürn the Younger, an Apollogruppe by Ottmar Obermaier, and paintings by Jean-François de Troy, Adriaen Isenbrant and Victor Wolfvoet the Younger, among many others.

Discover a selection where rarity meets craftsmanship, and where every object carries a story waiting to become part of another.

It is not often that a private collection of this calibre comes to auction.

Built over more than six decades by Prof. Dr. Med. Winfried and Dr. Gisela Schönberger, this remarkable collection reflects a lifetime of scholarship, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for European art. Bringing together works from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque, it offers a rare opportunity to encounter masterpieces that have remained together for generations.

Among the highlights are a fourteenth-century Gothic bust reliquary, a High Gothic Saint John the Evangelist dating to around 1240, the monumental Saint George and the Dragon, Girolamo Troppa’s The Healing of Tobias, a refined Madonna and Child from the Lower Rhine School, Joseph Haller’s The Resurrection of Christ, and David with the Head of Goliath, attributed to Elisabetta Sirani.

We are delighted to share that our specialist, Geza Lévi, was interviewed by the television channel SAT1 as an expert on bronze scultprues for a report examining the theft of artworks from public spaces. The feature explores not only the growing concern surrounding these losses, but also the artistic, historical, and cultural significance of public sculpture—works that shape our public spaces, preserve collective memory, and connect generations through art.

At Hargesheimer Kunstauktionen, our commitment to art extends far beyond the auction room. We believe every work of art carries a story that deserves to be understood, preserved, and protected. Through specialist expertise, provenance research, and our collaboration with the Art Loss Register, we are dedicated to promoting transparency, safeguarding cultural property, and ensuring that the works entrusted to us are treated with the care and respect they deserve.

We are proud to contribute to an ongoing dialogue that celebrates not only the beauty of art, but also our shared responsibility to preserve and protect it for future generations.

Built over more than six decades, this is not simply a collection of Old Master paintings and sculptures. It is the result of a lifetime dedicated to looking, learning, researching, and collecting at the highest level. From medieval sculpture and Italian Renaissance painting to works connected with some of the most important artistic centres of Europe, the breadth and quality of the collection are truly remarkable.
Perhaps the collection is best described in the words of Lambert Lombard scholar Gwendolyne Denhaene, who wrote to Prof. Schönberger: “You are truly a fortunate man, for you possess one of the very rare paintings that can be attributed to Lombard with some degree of certainty.”

For us, this sale is more than an auction. It is the dispersal of a collection built with passion, knowledge, and extraordinary dedication over a lifetime. Opportunities to acquire works from a collection of this calibre are exceptionally rare.

Our Summer Auctions brought together collectors, institutions, and enthusiasts from around the world in a celebration of art, craftsmanship, and collecting. From a Patek Philippe Nautilus achieving €60,000 to Renée Sintenis’ celebrated Little Daphne selling for €36,000, the season demonstrated the enduring appeal of exceptional objects and the stories they carry.

Beyond the results themselves, this season marked an important milestone for Hargesheimer with the successful launch of our first streamed live auctions. For the first time, collectors were able to participate seamlessly from anywhere in the world, joining bidders in the saleroom in real time. We are deeply grateful to all those who contributed to making this new chapter such a success.

For those who missed the auctions, the opportunity to collect is not over. Our Aftersale remains open, offering a carefully selected group of works still available for acquisition. Some of the most rewarding discoveries are often made after the hammer has fallen.

Looking ahead, we are pleased to present a special summer auction on 15 July at 3:00 PM CET featuring the collection of Prof. Dr. med. Winfried Schönberger and Dr. med. Gisela Schönberger. Assembled over more than six decades, this remarkable collection reflects a lifetime devoted to scholarship, connoisseurship, and a passion for the arts. For collectors, it offers a rare opportunity to acquire works from a distinguished private collection that may never again be seen on the market in its entirety.

We look forward to continue welcoming you into our auction room this Summer.
