For better or for worst, but the Web3 is coming and picking up pace to support and manage the challenges of the much-hyped Metaverse. Gaming leading the way as being experimental by nature (https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-59568929) and seemingly without creating impact in the “real world”. That will change rapidly as NFTs already sell for millions a piece in real money. It is easily imaginable that services and actions in the real world will impact the virtual life as well as vice versa in the not-too-distant future. This is somewhat scary as large corporations are writing the laws within those digital worlds and manipulation, as well as unwanted information gathering will largely go unnoticed. Welcome to the matrix.
Hence governance of those metaverses will be the key differentiator between dystopia for those of us on the fringes of what is acceptable and the unconstraint freedom, which only the digital worlds can offer. Immutable blockchains with clear, unchangeable rules might be a way out, but those rules need to be transparently discussed and fought over and not hidden in the small print of the T&Cs. We at swapto believe in starting the dialogue and trying things out early, such as connecting real world activities causing effects in the virtual ones, e.g. with virtual currencies. I invite everyone to start the debate by testing what it means when the “game never stops”, even if you are offline. The multiverse will be addictive to everyone consuming digital content, so let’s all try to make it a safe experience without regrets.
Game maker Ubisoft is launching its in-game NFT system this week.
