In research, you diversify grants and keep your options open. But in a startup, that multi-project mindset will scatter your focus and kill your momentum.

That is why you should watch the movie Air.

It is a masterclass in strategic concentration. When Nike’s basketball division was failing, they did not spread their tiny budget across several average athletes. They put every single dollar on one high-stakes bet. A rookie named Michael Jordan.

As an academic founder, you cannot commercialize five inventions at once. You have to pick the one breakthrough with the highest market potential and center your entire team’s energy right there.

Watch Air to see what absolute focus looks like.

In the industrial era, workers had a single box on an organizational chart. In a university, you are strictly a PI, a postdoc or a student. But a deep-tech spin-off is a living organism.

If your engineering team refuses to speak to customers because it is not in the job description, your venture is dead on arrival.

We need to stop hiring for static boxes and start hiring for mission adaptability.

Modern innovation requires fluid generalists who can navigate the messy middle without waiting for a manual to be written.

Exercise: Assign a critical operational project to a small, cross-functional team without giving them any guidelines, old templates or step-by-step instructions. Give them only the deadline and the required outcome (Inspired by "Turn the Ship Around" by L. David Marquet).

If you can work 8+ hours per day building someone else's dream, you should definitely invest 30 minutes in yourself.

Do you have a morning routine? How about including writing a book there? A side-hustle as a coach?

Do not let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do.

Monetizing your knowledge adds peace of mind.

Exercise: Spend 5 minutes each morning writing down one goal for the day related to your side hustle, personal growth, or knowledge-sharing. Clarify focus and build momentum (Inspired by "The Miracle Morning" by Hal Elrod).

Protect your peace at all cost. A chaotic mind cannot create a meaningful life. Priorize what brings you calm over what brings you conflict.

Easier said than done. Especially, in the turbulent starting times of transferring your work into a spin-off.

But protecting your peace does not mean avoiding challenges. It means choosing battles wisely.

Innovation thrives in clarity, not burnout. Prioritizing calm is a strategy.

Exercise: Before taking on a new commitment, ask yourself, if this Is this a "Yes!"? If not, it is a no. This helps you prioritize what truly matters and avoid unnecessary stress (Inspired by "Hell Yeah or No" by Derek Sivers).

Scaling with flawed data means building a house on quicksand. Your algorithms will confidently hallucinate your next strategic failure. What’s your golden rule for auditing the data your AI relies on?

Ever notice how the solution hits after you stop thinking about the problem?

That is not coincidence. It is sleep doing what it does best: consolidating, pruning and connecting ideas.

In research and entrepreneurship alike, rest is not a break from productivity. It is part of the process.

Startup culture often rewards hustle. Academia praises late nights. But sleep debt has a cost. On clarity, creativity and emotional regulation.

Exercise: Spend 5 minutes each night dumping unresolved thoughts onto paper. Let your brain "offload" before rest (Inspired by: The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron).

22/05/2026

You probably think your biggest challenges are technical or financial. But the real bottleneck is often your own expert brain. That is why you should read "The Artist’s Way".

It sounds like a book for painters, but it is actually a manual for unblocking high-level problem solving. As a founder, you are essentially a creator. And that requires a type of mental agility that traditional academic training can actually stifle.

The book introduces "Morning Pages". Three pages of longhand, consciousness writing. For a founder, this is not journaling. It is a daily brain dump. It is how you find the signal in the noise.

Cameron also talks about the "Internal Censor". In the lab, being a critic is a badge of honor. In a startup, that same critic can paralyze your decision-making. This book teaches you how to silence that voice so you can take the leap and focus on what could go right.

Read it to stop over-analyzing and start executing. It is about recovering the creative energy you need to turn your research into a venture.

Your schedule shows the story of your priorities.

Make sure it aligns with the leader you want to be.

As a spin-off founder, it is normal to have scattered priorities. Having a schedule full of reactive tasks. For our various roles that we have to comply with.

It is easy that the calendar is filled with administrative tasks while neglecting strategic planning or investor relations. We risk stalling the company’s growth.

How do you ensure your schedule aligns with the leader you want to be?

Exercise: Build a micro-habit, like spending the last 15 minutes of your day on strategic planning. Align your schedule to dedicate a block of time to a single, high-impact task without distractions (Inspired by: "Atomic Habits" by James Clear).

No amount of regret over a missed grant or a failed experiment can change your past.

But founders often stay stuck there, wasting the human energy they need for today. Acceptance is not passive. Now, what can you do differently?

When you stop resisting the reality of your startup’s messy middle, you start using your intelligence to solve real-world problems instead of relitigating old ones.

Exercise: Go for a 15-minute walk. Instead of thinking about the solution, just observe things as they are. The weather, the noise, the traffic (Inspired by "Stillness Is the Key" by Ryan Holiday).

Trust is the foundation of any high-performing team, but it cannot exist in a vacuum.

Without clear instructions, even the most capable people will eventually falter, leading to frustration and burnout.

True leadership is about balancing that deep belief in your team with the tactical clarity they need to succeed. When you provide a roadmap and the autonomy to navigate it, you create an environment where excellence is predictable rather than accidental.

Trust gives them the courage to start, but clarity gives them the power to finish.

Exercise: Start your weekly meeting by stating the objective for the week. Then ask: "If I disappeared for three days, what is the one goal you would prioritize above all others?" (Inspired by "Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath).
