There should be age limits!

Really?

Enzo Ferrari told a tractor manufacturer he didn’t understand cars. He went and founded Lamborghini at 47.

A cook living off a pension check franchised his chicken recipe door to door at 62. It became KFC.

Werner Otto had two failed businesses behind him. At 40, four days after his birthday, he registered a mail-order company from two wooden barracks in Hamburg. It became the Otto Group.

Soichiro Honda sold the wreckage of his bombed-out factory to Toyota. At 42, in a wooden shack, he started again. He founded Honda.

Giorgio Armani sold his own Volkswagen to help fund his own label, at 41.

Chieko Aoki’s husband’s hotel business collapsed. At 48, she built her own brand from what was left. It’s now one of Brazil’s largest hotel chains.

Dr. Carmen Hijosa remortgaged her house at 60 to research a leather alternative made from pineapple fibre. Piñatex is now used by over 1,000 brands.

Momofuku Ando lost his fortune and invented instant ramen in a shed, at 48.

Age limit? None of them believed it.

Niemeyer had already designed the Pampulha complex at 36 and the main buildings of Brasília between 49 and 53. He didn't stop: he completed the Niterói Museum at 88, in 1996.
Picasso had already been an established painter for decades when he painted Guernica, at 55.
Cousteau founded his own research society at 63 and kept leading expeditions into his 80s.
For others, the defining milestone came after 50. Copernicus published his theory of the universe at 70. Lise Meitner helped discover nuclear fission at 60. Darwin published "On the Origin of Species" at 50. Zaha Hadid became the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize at 54. Rita Levi-Montalcini won the Nobel Prize at 77 and kept researching until she was 103. Maria Lenk came back to competition at 65 and was still breaking world records at 90.
None of them treated 50 as a limit. Some never came close to considering it one.

What if it’s time for a change?

A study of 2.7 million companies found that a 50-year-old founder is 2.8 times more likely to succeed than a 25-year-old.

Science already has a name for this phase: “peakspan”—the period when you still retain about 90% of your functional capacity. Vitality. Experience. Judgment. It all comes together at the same time.

So why does it seem so hard to put this into practice?

We see two extremes getting in the way. Some professionals lose their momentum after hearing that their role no longer fits, or that early retirement is “an option.” Others fall into what we call corporate arrogance—assuming that decades of experience, on its own, are enough to turn any idea into a business.
