Diversity and belonging in organizations
Diversity is a growing reality not only in international, but also solely locally active enterprises. Diversity comes in countless forms. It holds a much wider spectrum than gender, religion or cultural background. We can break it down to generation, educational level, up-bringing, socio-economic status, personal style or thought patterns.
Statistics show a positive influence of diversity on creativity, problem solving and innovation and name challenges as language barriers, difference in communication styles or the building of sub- groups, which can lead to an increase of prejudice and exclusion.
Factors of a diversity embracing culture are:
- fairness in pay, access to education and career development.
- recognition of each individual as such and for who they are
- recognition of each individual as a member of the group
-recognition of each individual’s contribution
Belonging is a deep rooted base need of each human being.
Consequently organisations need, in order to create a truly diversity embracing culture, to build a framework of justice and equality in the companies structure and policies, as well as develop an open mind and heart in all of the individuals forming the organization.
Training on awareness, empathy and radical acceptance of people being different, bridging between groups and bonding within groups will heighten a sense of cohesion, a sense of belonging!
Diversity needs to be seen in context of belonging to be a success factor.
