Setting Goals for the sake of shipping an idea vs staying focused on how you want to change people‘s behavior.

How do you set goals?

Whether you call it an idea bank, an idea long list, or something entirely different, chances are that you're maintaining an Excel file or a Confluence page where you park all these "great" ideas, people around you are coming up with regularly.

And you should get rid of it. Here's why.

The biggest problem with an idea backlog is that it shifts every discussion about "what should we do next" towards solutions. Teams and entire departments will revisit these idea backlogs to decide what to work on next.

This feels natural to a lot of people because specific solutions give you this (perceived) control over what the team will be doing next, what to tell the CEO, and what to sell the customers.

But an Idea Backlog can also lead to making your Product Discovery feel like it's only about polishing existing ideas.

This is a teaser from my upcoming appearance on the Agile Atelier podcast. The full episode drops in about a week. If you want me to DM you the full link once it's published, just leave a comment below this post.

There's no magic formular to make Product Discovery work in YOUR Company.

But if you and your team can focus on adopting a set of key habits, you will have a much higher chance of succeeding with your efforts independent of the challenge you face, the resources you have, and the industry you're working in.

❶ Focus your team's alignment efforts on facts and user behaviors instead of solution details and deadlines.

❷ Map the user problems you want to pursue to overarching business priorities for continuous buy-in.

❸ Avoid completing the same set of actions just because they "worked last time." Re-adjust your plan based on the situation.

🤔Is this a problem worth solving?

💡 Is this an idea worth pursuing?

Those are the two key questions Product Discovery should aim to answer.
Through an adaptive and iterative application of whatever tools a product team needs (depending on their industry, company culture etc.).

One of the biggest challenges? Not trying to answer both questions for the sake of it and from an opportunistic perspective.

Instead, they should contribute to the overarching priorities of a company. Typically reflected in qualitative, quantitative, or efficiency-oriented Impact Metrics.

I discussed topics like this on the Agile Atelier Podcast - The episode drops in 2 weeks. Make sure to watch my feed to learn when it drops.

Talking to users.

Coming up with new ideas.

Running experiments.

All of these things are SUPER important for our work as product managers.

But knowing when and how to use the right techniques so they lead to backlog items that actually make a difference? That's what's called Product Discovery. And it's the backbone of any successful product organization.

Which is why I just published a comprehensive update to my in-depth guide on Product Discovery.

This new guide will show you everything you need to know about navigating the problem space without getting caught-up in solutions. All in one place.

-How to approach structuring Product Discovery

-How to navigate the non-linear path of various Product Discovery phases

-My favorite Product Discovery Techniques

What‘s the difference between Impact Mapping and...

One of the most common questions I get when teaching or talking about Impact Mapping is how it compares to other frameworks out there.

With the help of a couple of experts, I tried to shine some light on the difference between Impact Mapping and...

✅...Opportunity Solution Trees (OST)

✅...Objectives and Key Results (OKR)

✅ ...North Star Framework

✅ ...Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD)

Which other frameworks help you the most, to structure your work? Any thoughts on how those might differ from/complement/compete with/relate to Impact mapping?
