A water system working on handover day is one thing. What matters is whether it is still working years later.

For WASH projects, this needs to be considered from the beginning.

Who will operate the system? What maintenance will it need? Are spare parts and technical support available locally? And what will it cost to keep the water flowing once the project funding has ended?

Solar water pumping can remove one major challenge: the ongoing dependency on fuel or an unreliable electricity supply. But solar power alone does not make a water project sustainable.

The pump needs to be correctly sized. Controls and protection need to suit the application. Maintenance needs to be manageable locally. And if something does go wrong, there needs to be a way to get support and spare parts.

These are questions we have been working with for many years at LORENTZ, together with our partners and organisations implementing water projects around the world.

Whether the application is a rural community, school or healthcare facility, our aim is the same: to provide a solar pumping solution that can keep delivering water long after installation.

Planning a WASH project? Talk to us early. We can help you look at the technical requirements, long-term operation and support needed to make the water supply work beyond the project phase.

Managing a feedlot with 22,000 head of cattle requires a lot of water and a lot of energy to pump the water!

In Areal, Brazil, our partner Sanchonete Agronegocios installed a LORENTZ solar-powered pumping system to help secure the feedlot’s daily water supply.

The system pumps 870,000 litres of water every day from a lake to a storage reservoir. From there, gravity distributes the water across the entire feedlot.

Powered by 70 solar modules, the pumping system operates entirely on solar energy. Satellite monitoring also gives the feedlot manager 24/7 visibility of pumping performance and water availability from anywhere.
The result: a reliable water supply for 22,000 cattle, day after day.

870,000 litres a day. 22,000 cattle. Powered by the sun.

3 wells. 3 solar pumps. 2.9 million litres of water every day.

That’s what it takes to keep avocados growing through the dry season in Huabal, Peru.

For this large-scale avocado operation, irrigation needs to continue year-round, including when rainfall disappears and water demand changes with the seasons.

Our long-standing partner Qomir sac installed three LORENTZ submersible solar pumping systems, with each system drawing water from a separate well.

Together, they pump around 2.9 million litres per day, powered directly by the sun for approximately 8–9 hours each day.

But what happens when the sun isn’t shining?

Instead of storing solar energy in batteries, the operation stores water.

During the day, the pumps move water into storage while solar energy is available. The stored water can then be used whenever irrigation is needed.

It’s a simple principle with a big advantage for solar irrigation:
Sometimes, the best way to store solar energy is to store water.

See how Qomir helped a large-scale avocado operation in Peru secure its irrigation supply with solar-powered pumping.

Every global company has a beginning.

Ours started in a cellar and a garage in northern Germany.

It was here that Bernt Lorentz and his father began experimenting with an idea that seemed almost impossible at the time: using solar energy to pump water.

They spent countless hours building, testing, improving, and starting over.

That's where the LORENTZ story began.

Today, our solar water pumping solutions operate in more than 130 countries, helping farmers, communities, businesses, and industries access water using solar power.

Forty years later, we're still driven by the same goal: making water access simpler, smarter, and more sustainable.

Have you been part of the LORENTZ journey?

Whether as a customer, partner, employee, or supporter, we'd love to hear your story in the comments.

How do you know if a water system 200 km away is still running?

You could drive there.

Or you could check it from your desk.

With LORENTZ Global - remote monitoring and management, you can see what your solar pumping systems are doing in real time. If something changes, you know immediately, without waiting for the next site visit.

And it's not just the pump.

Water levels in wells and tanks, system pressure, and other connected sensors can all be monitored remotely. This information is used to automate the system, but it also helps you understand how the water system is performing over time.

Remote management helps you:

🔹Detect problems before they become failures
🔹Reduce unnecessary site visits
🔹Monitor water production and system performance from anywhere
🔹Lower operating and maintenance costs

For projects in remote areas, that can mean faster support, lower costs, and greater confidence that water is available when it's needed.

Because sometimes the biggest saving isn't the repair. It's the 200 km journey you never had to make.

Who controls your water costs?

If you're paying for diesel or grid electricity every time you pump water, the answer may not be you.

Every litre of water has an energy cost. And if that energy comes from diesel or the grid, you're not just paying for today's pumping. You're committing to years of ongoing operating costs.

Fuel prices fluctuate. Electricity tariffs rise. Supply can be unreliable. Yet your crops still need irrigation, your livestock still need water, and your operations cannot afford downtime.

Solar changes the equation.

More importantly, it gives you something that's becoming increasingly valuable: control.

Instead of paying for every hour your pump operates, you invest once in your energy source and benefit from it every day.

That means:

🔹 No fuel deliveries
🔹 No exposure to rising diesel prices or unavailability
🔹 No unexpected electricity tariff increases
🔹 Reduced operating costs
🔹 Reliable water wherever it is needed

For many LORENTZ customers, switching from diesel or grid-powered pumping to solar delivers a return on investment in as little as one year, depending on local energy costs and water demand.

After that, every day is another day you're pumping water with no energy costs.

The smartest investment is not just a better pump. It is taking control of the energy that powers it.

Will your groundwater be there tomorrow?
Most people cannot answer this until tomorrow.

Monitoring groundwater levels provides valuable insight into your water source, helping you make informed decisions before levels get low.

It can help you:

🔹Detect declining water availability early
🔹Understand seasonal fluctuations
🔹Protect wells from over-pumping
🔹Improve long-term water planning
🔹Gain confidence in your water supply

LORENTZ systems have integrated level monitoring making it easy to collect this information and for the pumps to react on real-time data automatically.

Because sustainable water management is not just about pumping water. It is about understanding and protecting the resource you depend on.

The more we understand our groundwater today, the better we can protect it for tomorrow.

💧 1 million litres of water per day for rice irrigation - powered by the sun

Rice farmers need large volumes of water, but just as importantly, they need it at the right stages of the crop cycle.

In Sibonor Ompu Ratus Village, Indonesia, a LORENTZ solar pumping system delivers up to 1 million litres - 1,000 m³ - of water every day to support land preparation, crop establishment and the management of water levels in the rice fields.

This reliable water supply helps farmers maintain the field conditions needed during critical stages of crop development, while reducing dependence on rainfall and diesel-powered pumping.

Supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and BAPPENAS through Indonesia’s Low Carbon Development Initiative, the project demonstrates how solar pumping can deliver the volume and reliability required for productive rice irrigation.

One million litres every day means better control of water throughout the growing season, and greater confidence in the harvest.

Do you keep reading about the next solar technology that's going to double PV module efficiency?

Don't worry too much about the headlines.

When you buy a solar module, you're buying power output.

A 400 Wp module is rated to deliver 400 Wp under standard test conditions, whether its efficiency is 21% or 24%.

So what does efficiency actually change?

Mostly the size of the module. A higher-efficiency module produces the same power from a smaller surface area. That's a big advantage if roof space is limited.

But for many solar water pumping projects, space isn't the deciding factor.

Instead, focus on what really matters:

✔️ A reputable module manufacturer
✔️ Reliable long-term performance
✔️ A competitive cost per watt ($/Wp)
✔️ A solar pumping system designed to deliver the water you need

At LORENTZ, we design systems that maximize reliable water production. We achieve this with high efficiency motors and electronics, optimized software, and good system design, based on 30 years experience.

Buy based on the power you need, not the module efficiency number.

Because at the end of the day, the sunlight is free. What matters is turning it into water, reliably and efficiently.
