Approaching hybrid challenges

In any major change or transformation, people face a specific challenge. On the one side, they need to act sufficiently in the old realm, and on the other side, they need to develop new approaches and mindsets, which pave the way for adapting to and also co-creating an unknown future.

In such a situation, it is important to be aware, that the approaches of the past most of the time don’t fit the challenges of the future and vice versa. For example, it does not make sense to approach a repetitive workstream in an agile manner, nor does it make sense to use detailed long-term project management tools in a fast-changing environment.

The Coaching Spectrum describes different and targeted approaches for dealing in such a hybrid reality, differentiating complicated and known reality from the complex and unknown.

In the complicated reality we often use:
Skills Coaching
Development Coaching
Performance Coaching

In the complex reality we rather apply:
Personal Coaching
Transformation Coaching
Emergent Coaching

This first video will present the general context of hybrid organizations and the coaching spectrum concept. The following videos will take a deeper look into each of these coaching formats.

Differentiating these challenges can support executives, managers, and employees working in self-organized teams to reflect strategies and approaches for acting appropriately in a hybrid reality.

The coaching spectrum can help coaches to be more specific and focused in their contribution to larger change and transformation processes.

“Mindset – Creating your Reality” is the title of the second video from our series “…and other stories from the Change Café”. The series is building on the content of the book “Parachuting Cats into Borneo” which and I have written a couple of years ago. In this video I reflect on the importance to have a triple focus to successfully run a strategic change process- or a transformation: 1. A clear way forward to achieve the goal, 2. Breaking down the strategy to the level of necessary skills and competencies and 3. Creating the appropriate mindset.

I would like to call your attention to the first video of the series “… and other stories from the change cafè” related to the content of the book “Parachuting Cats into Borneo”. I had written the book together with my friend Alan AtKisson in 2016.
I feel that the content of the book is still very relevant in these turbulent times as research shows, that only one-third of all organizational change processes are successful. Hopefully, the video supports change agents in avoiding “Parachuting Cats into ….”

Executive Summary: Coaching Culture - Success Factor for the VUCA world?

Together with h_da, the University of Applied Science in Darmstadt we have conducted a study on, to what degree organizations have installed a Coaching Culture and how that helps them with the challenges of the VUCA world. VUCA stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity, and describes the phenomenon, that the world seems to be in a rather unstable state. We believe that this phenomenon is just the outer indicator for more general change, which the WBGU calls the Great Transformation towards a more sustainable world.
We have created a few little videos explain some of the results of our study. We have uploaded the last one, an executive summary, here on Facebook.
