The approval for NeemAzal®‑T/S has been extended under Article 51 for professional use in leaf vegetable cultivation. Within the same crop group, a distinction is made between three different areas of application:
• the open-field cultivation of leafy vegetables,
• the greenhouse propagation of young plants and
• the use of crops as baby leaf.
This ensures that different production methods in professional leafy vegetable cultivation are clearly and separately taken into account.

During this year’s Biocontrol Week in Brussels, IBMA members exchanged views on current developments in EU plant protection regulation.
The focus was on the EU Pesticides Omnibus, questions regarding the definition of biological plant protection, and planned procedural adjustments.
The programme was complemented by working group sessions (‘Working Parties’) on the topics of ‘Proteins and Peptides’, ‘Microbial-based fermented mixtures’, and the newly established group ‘Formulation & Application’.

𝗣𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 took place in Dossenheim from 8 to 12 March. The international workshop organised by the IOBC/WPRS Working Group was hosted by the 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝘂𝘀 𝗞𝘂̈𝗵𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 (𝗝𝗞𝗜) and brought together experts from academia and industry.

The focus was on current developments regarding pheromones and other semiochemical signals in integrated pest management – including mating disruption, the use of beneficial insects, new dispenser technologies and AI-supported monitoring solutions.

Trifolio-M GmbH also took part and contributed to the professional exchange on current issues and practical applications.

🍎 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥: 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐛 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐰 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞
With bud break in April, the risk of 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐛 (𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬) increases. Infections mainly originate from spores in overwintered fallen leaves and affect young leaves. 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐰 also frequently occurs during bud break.

Further measures in this phase:
• Observation of initial aphid populations
• Thinning of fruit sets
• Frost protection in case of late frost risk

As part of integrated plant protection strategies, preparations based on 𝐚𝐳𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧, such as NeemAzal®-T/S, are also used for aphids and other sucking insects (maximum 2 applications per year).

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗲

In March and April, the first sucking and biting insect pests appear in many crops. The first signs – such as aphid colonies or young larval stages – are the starting point for deciding on plant protection measures.

Biological insecticides based on the active ingredient azadirachtin – such as NeemAzal®‑T/S – work primarily by inhibiting feeding and disrupting the development of insects. After ingestion through sucking or feeding, moulting and development processes are affected, which can slow down further population development.

Since these active ingredients do not primarily act as contact poisons, their use at the onset of infestation or in early larval stages is particularly relevant.

Early field monitoring in spring therefore remains an essential part of proper plant protection management in order to detect and address pests in sensitive early stages of development.
