😊 Invitation to the 2026 Leipzig Startup Night on November 17, 2026

🚀 On November 17, 2026, the 2026 Leipzig Startup Night will take place in the large lecture hall of the Faculty of Sports Science at 7:00 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.).

🛜 Leipzig Startup Night (LGN) is a pitch and networking event for the local and regional startup scene. Startups meet potential investors, startup teams present their business ideas, and various awards are presented.

🤩 At LGN 2026 on November 17, all key players in the local startup scene will gather on the campus of the Faculty of Sports Science at the University of Leipzig to watch pitches from various startup teams and presentations by diverse startups, as well as to network over food and drinks. Teams and individuals will be honored in various award categories (Idea Award, Startup Award, Ten Years After, Lifetime Achievement).

👏 The LGN serves as an important forum for presenting innovative business ideas and startups, as well as for the exchange of experiences among various stakeholders in the city of Leipzig and the districts of Leipzig and Northern Saxony. The goal is to support and promote a positive startup climate in the region.

🖐 The LGN is organized by SMILE—the startup initiative at the University of Leipzig, the startup consulting firm Startbahn 13 at HTWK Leipzig, Sparkasse Leipzig, the City of Leipzig, and the districts of Leipzig and North Saxony.

👏 👏 Leipzig University moves into new innovation centre at the Baumwollspinnerei

🚀 With the opening of the Smart Infrastructure Hub Leipzig innovation centre on 1 October, Leipzig University’s SMILE start-up initiative has moved into its new premises in Hall 7 of the Baumwollspinnerei in Leipzig. The centre is a joint project of SMILE, the City of Leipzig, SpinLab and HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management. It will provide start-up teams with everything they need to develop their businesses, all under one roof.

👍 Leipzig University will use more than 500 square metres in Hall 7, accounting for around 40 per cent of the second floor. The SMILE Incubation Space located there will be used by university start-up teams that have already secured funding, for example through a federal EXIST Business Start-up Grant or a technology start-up grant from the Saxon Development Bank (SAB).
“By establishing a presence in Hall 7, we are strengthening entrepreneurship as well as knowledge and technology transfer as important areas of Leipzig University’s work. Hall 7 embodies a modern understanding of the role a university can play in its city and the surrounding region. We are creating an environment in which academic ideas can make the transition into business practice and our start-up teams can become part of a vibrant innovation ecosystem. Of particular importance to us is close collaboration with strong partners from academia, business and Leipzig’s start-up community,” says Rector Professor Eva Inés Obergfell.

💡 About SMILE
Leipzig University’s SMILE start-up initiative (www.smile.uni-leipzig.de) has been supporting university-based start-up projects since 2006. Since then, it has supported more than 650 new ventures and helped secure around €41 million in early-stage funding. In 2025, 32 companies were founded or began trading with at least one person from the Leipzig University community involved as an owner.

📅 Call for Chapters: Ecosystems to Promote Academic Entrepreneurship in Africa

🌍 ACCESS invites research papers and university best-practice case studies for a new edited volume, Ecosystems to Promote Academic Entrepreneurship in Africa. Abstracts and proposals are due 30 September 2026.

🚀 Across Africa, universities are setting up entrepreneurship centres, incubators, technology-transfer offices, innovation hubs and science parks. But the institutional capacity to turn research and academic talent into real economic, social and environmental value remains uneven, and the evidence base on what actually works is still thin. This volume sets out to change that.

👍 Rather than assuming a single model of the "entrepreneurial university", the book looks for context-sensitive mechanisms, constraints and transferable lessons across different institutional and national settings.

🌍 Empowering African Innovation: AGEA Start-up Class 2026 Launches in Leipzig!

👍 Hosted by the SEPT Competence Center at Leipzig University, the programme will welcome 18 innovators—students and researchers—from eight universities in Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria. The initiative supports African university start-ups in developing innovative business models and strengthening their readiness for the market, partnerships, and investment.

💡 The AGEA Start-up Class 2026 will bring nine university-based start-up projects from Africa to Leipzig for an intensive 10-day entrepreneurship programme from 23 September to 3 October 2026.

Final International SDG Partnerships Conference in Costa Rica

This past August, the SEPT Competence Center took part in the final international conference of the SDG Partnerships Project, held in Alajuela, Costa Rica, under the theme “Universities that Transform: Innovation, Linkage and Development.”

The event was hosted by Universidad Técnica Nacional (UTN) and brought together representatives from the partner universities of the network: Universidad del Rosario (Colombia), Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (Perú), and the SEPT Competence Center at Leipzig University (Germany).

This closing conference marked the third and final gathering in a three-year series that previously took place in Germany, Perú, and Colombia, and was supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

👍 Our ACCESS 2.0 Alumni Workshop in Ghana Strengthens Project Development via Digital Tools

🌍 From 6–8 August 2026, selected ACCESS alumni consisting of lecturers and professors from Ghana and Kenya gathered at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, for the ACCESS Alumni Workshop Ghana 2026.

🚀 The three-day workshop provided an opportunity for alumni to connect, exchange expertise and, most importantly, work together developing credible, collaborative and fundable projects with the help of digital tools and platforms.

Calling All Businesses: Open up international market opportunities with international students

How much potential does a product have in international markets? Who are the competitors—and what does a successful market entry look like?

As part of the International Business and Export Management Training (EMAT) program, the SEPT Competence Center at Leipzig University offers SMEs and startups the opportunity to explore these questions together with international students.

Starting October 9, international students will work on specific challenges posed by participating companies. The focus will be on a jointly selected target market. The teams will analyze market potential, competitive structures, and relevant framework conditions, and, based on this analysis, develop practical recommendations for market entry.

For companies, EMAT offers the opportunity to view new international markets from a global perspective, gain additional inspiration for their own internationalization strategy, and, at the same time, connect with qualified young international professionals.

The results generated by the project will be made available to participating companies.

Unternehmen gesucht: Internationale Marktchancen mit internationalen Studierenden erschließen

Wie groß ist das Potenzial eines Produkts auf internationalen Märkten? Welche Wettbewerber gibt es – und wie kann ein erfolgreicher Markteintritt aussehen?

Im Rahmen des International Business and Export Management Trainings (EMAT) bietet das SEPT Competence Center der Universität Leipzig KMU und Start-ups die Möglichkeit, diese Fragen gemeinsam mit internationalen Studierenden zu untersuchen.

Von 9. Oktober arbeiten internationale studierende an konkreten Fragestellungen teilnehmender Unternehmen. Im Mittelpunkt steht ein gemeinsam ausgewählter Zielmarkt. Die Teams analysieren Marktpotenziale, Wettbewerbsstrukturen und relevante Rahmenbedingungen und entwickeln darauf aufbauend praxisorientierte Empfehlungen für den Markteintritt.
Für die Unternehmen bietet EMAT die Chance, neue Auslandsmärkte aus einer internationalen Perspektive zu betrachten, zusätzliche Impulse für die eigene Internationalisierungsstrategie zu erhalten und gleichzeitig mit qualifizierten internationalen Nachwuchskräften in Kontakt zu kommen.

Die im Projekt erarbeiteten Ergebnisse werden für die teilnehmende Unternehmen zur Verfügung gestellt.

🌎 SDG-Partnerships Final Conference 2026: Innovation Networks Meet in Costa Rica

From 10–14 August 2026, the SDG-Partnerships consortium will meet in San José, Costa Rica, for the final conference of the project.

The event will bring together partners from Germany, Peru, Colombia, and Costa Rica, as well as members of the international iN4iN network, to reflect on achievements, exchange knowledge, and strengthen future cooperation in innovation management and sustainable development.

Highlights include:
🔹 Internal consortium sessions to evaluate the project journey and future perspectives
🔹 An international iN4iN event connecting innovation actors worldwide
🔹 A special alumni gathering celebrating graduates of the Innovation Management Programme in Costa Rica

After three years of collaboration, research exchange, capacity building, and international partnership development, the conference will celebrate the impact of SDG-Partnerships and the networks created along the way.

👍 SEPT MBA Alumni Meeting in Hanoi

👩‍🎓 On July 12, more than 40 SEPT MBA alumni met at VinaChem’s premises to discuss joint activities related to supporting students and providing continuing management education.

🚀 Several alumni presented their companies and highlighted opportunities for cooperation with Germany. The meeting also aimed to prepare for the 20th anniversary celebration of the SEPT MBA program (https://www.wifa.uni-leipzig.de/en/sept-competence-center/masters-program), a collaboration between Leipzig University and Hanoi University of Science and Technology, which will take place in October 2026.
