Genau hier setzt DEMOS – Building Democratic Resilience through Media Literacy and Mentoring an.

🇪🇪 European Learning Network (ELN)

📅 Projektlaufzeit: 16. November 2026 bis 15. November 2028

AI skills are becoming labour market skills – and new data from Europe shows just how quickly this is happening. 🤖🇪🇺

A newly published analysis by Jan Büchel, Jan Engler and Armin Mertens from the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft (IW) provides some striking insights into the growing demand for AI skills across Europe.

🔹 In 2025, 20% of EU companies with 10 or more employees were already using at least one major AI technology – compared with just 8% in 2023.

🔹 The share of AI-related job postings more than doubled, from 0.7% in 2022 to 1.7% in 2025.

🔹 The number of highly AI-exposed employees with in-depth AI skills in the EU is estimated at around 3.7 million in 2025, up from 1.4 million in 2022.

These findings highlight an increasingly important challenge for Europe:

How can we ensure that people have the skills they need to participate in an AI-driven labour market?

This is exactly where our Erasmus+ project ReSTART – Rebuilding Careers with AI Skills and Problem-Based Learning comes in.

ReSTART supports unemployed adults in developing job-relevant AI skills and human–AI collaboration competences through practical, problem-based learning, career pathways, micro-credentials and workplace exposure.

Our goal is not simply to teach people how to use AI. It is to help them translate technological change into new skills, new opportunities and sustainable career pathways.

Research identifies the skills challenge. ReSTART works on practical learning solutions.

🇪🇺☕ SMILE CAFE in action – learning, connecting and growing together!

This week, our European SMILE CAFE partnership has come together in Reggio Emilia, Italy, for an important milestone in our project: the Training for Professionals and testing of the SMILE CAFE Methodology.

After months of research, development and exchange, we are now putting our ideas into practice – testing methods, sharing experiences and preparing the next phase of our work. Our common goal is clear: to help people aged 55+ strengthen their digital skills, stay connected and participate actively in social life.

Because digital inclusion is about much more than knowing how to use technology.
It is about confidence, independence, participation – and human connection. ❤️

SMILE CAFE therefore combines digital learning with well-being and social interaction, creating welcoming learning environments where technology becomes a tool for connecting people rather than separating them. The project will result, among other things, in a multimodal training programme, a methodological handbook for professionals and trainers, and the SMILE CAFE Hub.

These days in Reggio Emilia are also a wonderful reminder of what European cooperation can achieve: bringing together different perspectives, expertise and experiences from Austria, Germany, Italy and Lithuania to develop solutions for challenges that affect all our societies. 🇦🇹 🇩🇪 🇮🇹 🇱🇹

A big thank you to our Italian partner Progetto Crescere for hosting us in Reggio Emilia and for creating such a welcoming environment for learning, discussion and exchange.

We are looking forward to taking the next steps together – and, above all, to bringing the SMILE CAFE experience to older learners across Europe! ☕😊🌍

Because learning has no age – and connection matters at every stage of life.

💙 Genau hier setzt SMILE CAFE an!

🤖 42% need AI skills – but only 15% receive AI training.
The gap is striking.

According to Cedefop, 42% of workers believe they need to further develop their AI-related skills. Yet only 15% report having participated in AI-related training. (https://www.cedefop.europa.eu/.../skills-productivity-and...)
At the same time, AI is already transforming tasks and workplaces across Europe. Cedefop stresses that upskilling and reskilling are becoming essential for employability and sustainable labour productivity.

💡 But what about people who are currently outside the labour market?
How can unemployed adults prepare for AI-supported workplaces if access to practical AI learning is already limited for many employees?

This is one of the challenges addressed by ReSTART – Rebuilding Careers with AI Skills and Problem-Based Learning.
Our approach focuses on:
🔹 practical AI skills
🔹 real-world problem-based learning
🔹 Human-AI Collaboration
🔹 career pathways for AI-supported jobs
🔹 accessible learning and micro-credentials

The AI transformation should not widen existing labour market gaps.
It should create new pathways back into employment.

👉 What do you think is the biggest barrier to AI training today: access, time, costs – or uncertainty about which skills are actually needed?
