Social media services Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram are back up and running after an outage that lasted almost six hours. The cause was a faulty configuration change which affected the company's internal tools and systems which complicated attempts to resolve the problem.
The disruption comes the day after an interview with a former Facebook employee who leaked documents about the company.
Frances Haugen said on Sunday that the company had prioritised "growth over safety".
Today, she will testify before a Senate subcommittee in a hearing titled "Protecting Kids Online", about the company's research into Instagram's effect on the mental health of young users. by

Whenever you give your password out, you become vulnerable. Don’t share your password with anyone!
Even if you trust someone, you should never give out your password. Your communications could be intercepted, the other person may write your password down or save it somewhere, or the other person’s computer may be infected with malware. You cannot control what happens to your password after you give it out. The only solution is to never share your password with anyone else, regardless of how much you trust them. No one should ever need your password. by

Your child may not tell you if they are being bullied online. Talk to your child about cyber-bullying.
Children who are being bullied online may not want to talk about it. They may feel ashamed or embarrassed, or simply be afraid of getting into trouble. Talk to your children about bullying and make sure that they know that they can come to you with any of their problems. Watch for any signs that someone may be bullying them through social media accounts or other online venues, such as a change in personality. by

Social engineers prey on the good-mannered. Don’t be afraid to say no.
Social engineers try to convince people to do things by preying on their urge to be good-mannered and polite. If someone asks you to give them personal information or to give them access to confidential information, don’t be afraid to be direct and say no.
A social engineer encounter can be through telephone, email, or even in person. Anyone suspicious should be denied access until you can verify their identity. by

Protect your kids online: place your children’s computer in a public area so you can keep an eye on them.
Despite how responsible your children are, don’t give in to their requests to keep computers in their bedrooms. Always place your kids’ computers in a public area, such as the living room or family room. Position the monitor so it faces outward, enabling you to shoulder surf and see what’s going on. Check browsers search history to keep tabs on the content your kids are accessing. by

Use Two-Factor Authentication - It’s important to have a strong password, but it’s even more imperative to have two-factor, or multi-factor, authentication. This method provides two layers of security measures so if a hacker can accurately guess your password, there is still an additional security measure in place to ensure that your account is not breached.

Clicking Without Thinking Is Reckless - Just because you can click, doesn’t mean you should. Remember, it can cost you a hefty sum. Malicious links can do damage in several different ways, so be sure to inspect links and ensure they’re from trusted senders before clicking. by

Protect yourself from phishing attempts:
1. Don’t open suspicious emails.
2. Don’t click on suspicious links; neither in emails nor other social media.
3. Don’t click on pop-up ads.
4. Use the right VPN. It can encrypt the network traffic you send and receive and hide your IP address, providing an additional layer of online privacy.
