🍃 Last Thursday, AlProtein participated in the Second Annual Green Growth Conference in Egypt, organized by UNDP Egypt under the theme “Driving Egypt’s Twin Transition: Green, Digital, and Inclusive Growth.”

At our booth at the Green and Digital Innovation Expo, we showcased how AlProtein produces sustainable protein from water lentils using brackish water and non-arable land, and connected with UNDP representatives and other organizations working toward a greener future for Egypt.

Thank you to UNDP Egypt, the Danish-Arab Partnership Programme, and all ecosystem partners (some of whom are tagged below) for supporting initiatives that drive green growth and sustainable business development. 🌱

Climate innovation moves forward when the right people come together.✨🌿

Our CEO & Co-Founder, Omar Zaghloul, joined the Climate-Tech Expo alongside 42 climate-tech startups, investors, corporates, and ecosystem leaders.

Across the week, the conversation went beyond climate innovation to the partnerships, investment, and collaboration needed to turn promising solutions into scalable impact in Egypt.

Thanks to Plug and Play Africa, GIZ Egypt, Changelabs, and adelphi for bringing the ecosystem together.

Let's keep the conversation going and build the next chapter of climate innovation together.

A quick recap from Lausanne 🇨🇭

Earlier this month, our CEO & Co-Founder, Omar Zaghloul, joined the MassChallenge Switzerland Half-Time Show in Lausanne.

It was a great opportunity to connect with founders, innovators, investors, and members of the Swiss startup ecosystem, while exchanging ideas around the future of food, biotechnology, and sustainable innovation.

Thank you to the MassChallenge Switzerland team for bringing the ecosystem together.

From 1,400+ applications to the Slush 100. 🚀

We’re excited to share that AlProtein has been selected as one of the startups participating in Slush 100 2026 in Helsinki.

For us, this is more than an event. It’s an opportunity to bring AlProtein’s vision to one of Europe’s most founder-focused startup ecosystems, meet investors and industry leaders, and share what we’re building at the intersection of AI, biotechnology, and sustainable food production.

From water lentils to scalable protein ingredients, we’re working to build a more efficient way to produce the proteins the world needs, using non-arable land and significantly less freshwater.

We’re looking forward to Helsinki, meeting fellow founders, and taking AlProtein one step further.

See you at Slush 2026 🇫🇮

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PROTEIN CODE: 11 NON-ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS. 🧬

In the previous post, we decoded the first layer of the protein code: the 9 essential amino acids our bodies cannot produce in sufficient amounts and therefore need to obtain from the diet.

But that leaves another question.
What about the other 11?

These are known as non-essential amino acids. The term can be slightly misleading, because “non-essential” does not mean “unimportant.” It simply means that, under normal conditions, the body can synthesize them.

The 11 non-essential amino acids are Alanine, Arginine, Asparagine, Aspartic Acid, Cysteine, Glutamic Acid, Glutamine, Glycine, Proline, Serine, and Tyrosine.
They are involved in a wide range of biological processes, including protein synthesis, metabolism, tissue maintenance, cell signaling, and the production of other important molecules in the body.

And just like with the essential amino acids, the story is not always as simple as the category suggests.

Under certain physiological conditions, such as growth, illness, injury, or metabolic stress, some amino acids that the body can normally synthesize may become conditionally essential because the body's demand exceeds its ability to produce enough of them.

So, when we look at a protein's amino acid profile, the picture becomes more complete.
The 9 essential amino acids tell us about the amino acids we need to obtain from our diet.
The other 11 reveal another important part of the biological system that makes up every protein.

Together, all 20 amino acids form the foundation of the protein code.

And now that we have decoded both layers, there is one final question.

What does this code look like in Water Lentils? 🌿

THE FIRST LAYER OF THE PROTEIN CODE: 9 ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS. 🔬

In the first post, we looked beyond the protein percentage and introduced the idea that protein quality starts with something deeper: its amino acid profile.

So, what exactly makes an amino acid “essential”?

Our bodies utilize 20 amino acids to construct proteins and support numerous biological functions. But there are 9 that our bodies cannot produce in sufficient amounts. These are the essential amino acids, which we need to obtain from our diet.

They are Histidine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Threonine, Tryptophan, and Valine.

Each one plays its own role in the body, from supporting protein synthesis and tissue maintenance to contributing to metabolism and the production of important biological molecules.

But here is where it gets interesting.

Knowing that a protein contains all 9 essential amino acids is only part of the story. Different protein sources can provide these amino acids in very different amounts and proportions.

This means that two protein sources can contain similar amounts of total protein while offering very different amino acid profiles.

So when we start decoding protein quality, we need to look beyond simply asking:

- Are the essential amino acids present?

- How much of each one does the protein provide?

- And how does that profile compare with what the body needs?

The 9 essentials are the first layer of the code. But they are only part of the full picture.

What about the other 11 amino acids?
