How do you score on the Financial Freedom Index? 📣

With this poll, life insurance provider LV1871 studies the mood surrounding financial freedom in Germany. Compared with 2022, Germany seems much calmer and more positive when it comes to money, freedom and the intersection between both: between 2022 and 2023, the index rose from 40,6 to 44,8%.
Whereas explosive inflation colored last year's mood considerably, the relaxing financial markets have translated to an altogether better mood with investors, savers and consumers.
The study shows that, while sentiments are more positive, Germany is still on the way towards potential financial freedom. The index places scores between 20 and 50% as "normal" – neither thriving financially nor living in financial chaos. The index insists that, while this is not an emergency situation, much more can be done. As per the index, financial control starts at about 50% – a goal surely shared by most in this economy.

Fight child poverty or each other? That’s the question 🫠

The Kindergrundsicherung (guaranteed child allowance) is an allocation for children from socially disadvantaged families. Studies show that people who grew up poor are much more likely to experience poverty in adulthood. In 2022, approximately 2.2 million children and teenagers below 18 living in Germany were at risk for poverty. The last few troubles years – pandemic, inflation and the energy crisis – have only increased the risk.

The Kindergrundsicherung has been an integral part of the political program of the ruling coalition. The family benefit equalization act, which is being replaced by the Kindergrundsicherung, forced families to jump through many bureaucratic hoops – which resulted in 70% of allocations never being claimed.
While everybody seemed to be in agreement that change needs to happen, financing has been a point of constant discussion between the FDP and the Green Party. The draft, tentatively agreed upon by all, has gone into arbitration in late 2023. The first of January is set as the official start date. From then on, the Kindergrundsicherung collects child benefit and child allowance into one two-tiered allocation. A basic allowance of 250 EUR per child plus a flat rate that is directly connected to the parents’ income. Every child is eligible for the allowance until the age of 18, 27 if the child goes on to university 21 if they go for training and apprenticeship.

But trouble is brewing: Now, shortly before the draft is set to go through the coalition committee, the FDP insists on a re-draft. Lisa Paus, Minister of Family, is firmly against it. The FDP is especially adamant about changing the law’s connection to 5000 new jobs. These newly created jobs are there to facilitate the change from the previous system to the new one. Minister of Finance Christian Lindner (FDP) worries that the Kindergrundsicherung will tempt more people to work less.
While Paus has been open to reducing the amount of jobs, she is not open to amending the law itself. The law has been decided among all parties, she says.
