Kimo Quaintance discusses Games for Actors and Non-Actors, by Augusto Boal on his LinkedIn Book Challenge video today.

Games for Actors and Non-Actors is a virtual encyclopedia of creative ways to explore emotions, the senses, memories, and the power of the body to express the potential for change. But what I wanted to focus on in this video is one of Boal's theater practices, called Forum Theater.

Forum Theater is a powerful method to help participants of a system investigate how the system works, understand the forces that are preventing change, and test out methods for changing their world as it is into the world as it can be.

It's our experience that future-oriented role play is an incredibly powerful and underrated tool for unleashing the power of groups to drive transformation and change. Embodying desired futures and future potential makes those futures lived experiences that can't be forgotten, and act as unifying experiences to sustain action in support of change.

Kimo Quaintance spoke with WirtschaftsWoche last week about the problem of learning and digitization in Germany. (his section begins on the second page).

He argues that most companies struggling to digitize don't have a technology problem, they have a learning culture problem... namely a lack of a learning mindset driving the organization.

That requires changing the role of leaders to focus on constant support for learning, rather than just exercising authority over decisions and budgets. It means bringing curiosity to the center of how you work, so that you grow your capacity for creative solutions, rather than just optimize yourself into a corner. It means designing for engagement and alignment, and letting go of unrealistic expectations of control and predictability.

Tech tools are constantly changing, so if you want transformation that means anything, put your energy into building a learning culture.

I'm always impressed what comes out when you give people the opportunity to explore together and discover common ground in service of collective action. It's all part of a much longer journey for me of learning that while talks and lectures have their place, listening and responding to a group is the art form I'd prefer to master. You have to let go of control and predictability, which is why few are inclined to design events this way, but what you gain in terms of engagement, insight and the potential for community-building - not to mention the pure fun of discovery - far outweigh the discomfort of the unknown."

What’s the best way to start off the week? We’d argue you can’t do much better than play time to wake up the body and mind.

Many thanks to the brilliant women of Frauen-verbinden, the CEO network for women, who joined us to explore the importance of play in the process of innovation. We explored how good playgrounds act as a system for connecting risk taking and the development of mastery, the support of positive self-image, social sense-making, adaptation, and resilience.
