In November, we contributed to a groundbreaking training session on Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains, marking the first adaptation of the SASI (Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains Initiative) course for Brazil. Funded by the GIZ projects SAFE and AgriChains, the session brought together GIZ staff from diverse projects to tackle challenges in sustainable supply chains and share best practices.

Key topics covered:
• EUDR (EU Deforestation-Free Regulation) & CSDDD (EU Due Diligence Directive)
• Human rights, child labor, and gender equity in value chains
• Forest conservation and digital innovation
• Financial solutions and systemic sustainability approaches

This pilot successfully addressed local needs, incorporating Brazilian-specific insights into the curriculum. Its interactive format – blending expert presentations with hands-on exercises – enabled participants to apply concepts directly to their projects, sparking lively discussions.

Projects like ProTS, FIP Paisagens Rurais, EcoAdvance, and others enriched the experience, adding real-world case studies and diverse perspectives. The training’s resounding success points toward future scaling to other regions and sectors.

Special thanks go to our colleague Fernando Régis de Almeida Camargo and KS Passos Auditoria e Consultoria for their commitment. You provided the right input and benefits for all participants.

Digitalization plays a major role for all of us – including our colleagues on the ground in Nigeria in our project “Support for the digital transformation of MSMEs in Nigeria through an ecosystem development approach,” which we are implementing on behalf of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH. From the 4th to the 8th of November, a delegation from the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN) visited several initiatives in Berlin and Frankfurt, where they had the opportunity to exchange ideas with similar agencies, share their experiences and return to Nigeria with new inspiration.

The first stop on the trip was Berlin, where the delegation explored Germany’s advanced digital ecosystem. The participants started at the Retail Garage, experiencing transformative AI and IoT technologies that are reshaping retail. This space showcased how innovations can enhance customer experiences and streamline operations, especially for MSMEs.

At Handelsverband Deutschland, the SMEDAN participants gained insights into the efforts of the German retail sector toward digitalization and how associations represent their interests at the national and EU levels. Next, Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) introduced the Digital Hub Initiative – a nationwide network fostering innovation and collaboration across sectors. This approach aligns with our goal to strengthen Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

Their final stop was at DAB Digitalagentur Berlin GmbH, where they learned about their support for MSMEs navigating digitalization, echoing SMEDAN’s mission for Digitalisation Service Points (DSPs) in Nigeria. With GIZ and DTC's guidance, this day laid a promising foundation for Nigeria's digital journey.

🙌 We are happy to announce the completion of the GPC III project in Sierra Leone, which represents an important part of the German government’s post-conflict assistance and was co-financed by KfW. Since its inception in 2006 (GPC I), the project (with our implementation role starting from Phase II in consortium with GITEC-IGIP in 2014) has played a crucial role in rebuilding and consolidating local infrastructure in the districts of Koinadugu, Kono, Kambia, Falaba, and Kailahun – areas that have been severely affected by the civil war and the Ebola outbreak.

🚧Investments in Infrastructure and Employment 🤝

Under the leadership of the National Commission for Social Action
(NaCSA) and with advisory support from us and our partner GITEC-IGIP, GPC has focused on creating long-term economic opportunities for rural communities, in particular women and youth. Throughout the duration of the GPC Programme, over 1,100 km of rural feeder roads were improved, and essential economic infrastructure such as more than 60 grain stores, wells and other facilities such as vegetable centers, rural markets, livestock paddocks etc. were constructed. These efforts have provided direct and indirect employment opportunities for many young people who were unable to attend school during the war, strengthened communities, and promoted sustainable growth.

Ensuring Sustainability through Capacity Building 💪

To ensure the sustainability of these investments, we have implemented comprehensive capacity-building initiatives with GPC. Local committees were successfully trained to manage the infrastructure independently, and district coordinators, community development officers, and engineers received training in technical, managerial, and digital skills to secure the continuity of the investments and the support to the beneficiaries in the long term maintenance.

🎥Our Journey in Video

We have compiled a video highlighting milestones and special moments of GPC III to reflect on the positive changes and recognize the efforts of everyone involved. We would like to thank all colleagues and stakeholders involved who supported the implementation of GPC 👏 Together, we have achieved great results on the way to ensure a more resilient and brighter future for the people of Sierra Leone 🙏

Between everyday office life and missions, togetherness is a top priority for us. Anyone working at ECO quickly realizes that there is a great sense of team spirit and that we enjoy creating shared memories. For this reason, we organize our traditional company outing every year 🥳

This time we travelled to Weimar, following in the footsteps of the German poets Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. After an interesting guided tour of the city along various monuments and Schiller's residence, enriched with many fascinating details about the lives of the two poets, we stopped for lunch at the restaurant Weißer Schwan, right next to Goethe's house. He had probably also been a guest here several times in the past.

Afterward, we took a closer look at Goethe's home, which is now a museum, and then took a leisurely stroll through the market square and past the castle before returning home with many new impressions 🙏

✈️ Our colleagues Fernando Régis de Almeida Camargo, Edgar Weber and Alisson Zumpano recently jetted off to Rio for a consortium meeting with Conexsus - Instituto Conexões Sustentáveis. Their mission? To discuss streamlining management processes for the implementation of our project “Bioeconomy and Value Chains in Brazil”.

The internet enables us to collaborate and exchange ideas at any time, regardless of distance. However, it's these face-to-face meetings with our partners and project colleagues that strengthen our collaboration and cohesion, which we value greatly 🙏

As we continue our journey, we remain committed to driving positive change and nurturing a greener, more resilient future for Brazil and beyond.

As the African business world evolves, digitalisation remains a crucial tool to foster efficient business operations for micro, small and medium enterprises, especially in Nigeria. This has spurred a myriad of programs and initiatives geared towards building a thriving ecosystem of resilient MSMEs in Nigeria.

The Omniverse Summit is one of such timely events that creates a dynamic convergence point for African digitalisation, innovation, creativity, and Entrepreneurship, where startups, regulators, government and academia are aggregated to dialogue and explore opportunities for growth and innovation for Nigeria.

In the same way, we are inspired at ECO Consult to facilitate projects geared towards innovation and development, and this is the bedrock of one of our projects- Support for the Digital Transformation of MSMEs in Nigeria through an Ecosystem Development Approach, jointly funded by GIZ and the European Union in partnership with Digital Transformation Centre Nigeria.

As an entrepreneur and advocate of digitalisation for MSMEs in Nigeria, our expert Kelvin Umechukwu, CEO of Bumpa and Founder of Consonance Club, recently participated in the Omniverse Summit. He contributed to panel discussions on collaborative innovation for the digital economy alongside industry peers such as Dr. Odiong Akpan, Dr. Victor Olamuiywa, Victoria Fabunmi, Hakeem Onasanya, and Chisom Ajaero.

He also highlighted our Capacity Building Support for ISOs Program, emphasizing how Innovation Support Organizations (ISOs) can empower non-tech MSMEs through our digital transformation program.

To shape our support programs effectively, we're conducting a Needs Assessment Survey for ISOs. If you're an ISO interested in participating, you can access the survey here: https://lnkd.in/dWUQKqwz.

We look forward to seeing tech and non-tech MSMEs benefit from all the services ISOs will be enabled to provide them with for efficient operations through digital transformation.

Our traditional workshop in January kicked off this year quite differently than planned. While it always offers us a chance to delve into specific topics, it's primarily about bringing everyone together.

At ECO, working from home or remotely isn't just made possible; it's truly embraced. Our team is spread across Germany and even abroad. So, it's extra special when they all make their way to our headquarters in Oberaula at the beginning of each year.

However, this year, that wasn't possible for everyone. The sudden snow chaos forced some to stay home. ❄️ For our organizers, that meant quickly putting together a remote solution so that those who stayed home could still participate in the workshop. They worked tirelessly the afternoon and evening before to make it happen. Thanks again to everyone involved in making it possible! 🙏 You did a great job! 👏

Alongside plenary discussions and intense group work, there were energizers, nice talks, coffee breaks, and shared activities on the agenda — always with our colleagues from home. In every group, at least one laptop was open, allowing remote colleagues to be part of everything.

Despite all the productivity, ECO workshops are anything but dull. Between work sessions, there's always an opportunity to chat, laugh, and simply have a good time together. It's no wonder that our group photo in the snow quickly turned into a snowball fight ❄️ With wet hair and cold fingers, everyone moved on to the next phase of the work session with big smiles and lots of motivation. 😎

It is always special when our project staff attend international conferences to exchange ideas with people in the same field of expertise and return to the projects with new insights. Hassen Chourabi (left), the team leader of our PromAP project in Niger, which we are implementing for GIZ together with GOPA AFC and IRAM, recently had this opportunity.

At SIAGRO 2023, the 13th International Agriculture Exhibition and Conference for West and Central Africa in Dakar, Senegal, he even had the opportunity to contribute his expertise as a panelist in a discussion.

Topics included:
🌿 Ensuring the sustainability of natural resources for productive and sustainable farming
🌱 The pivotal role of agricultural advisory services in guaranteeing sustainable farming practices, producing better yields with minimal expenses
🎓 The importance of agricultural training and innovation in improving farm productivity and enhancing producers' incomes
🤝 The significance of organizing producers into professional associations and cooperatives for better access to benefits and information

Hassen: "Although it was a short trip, the mission – visiting the exhibitors' show and participating in conferences – was a real success. I was able to expand my knowledge, contribute to it, and make new contacts. I returned to Niger with many new ideas and look forward to sharing all my experiences with my team colleagues, enriching the work at PromAP."
