Issue 13 of our Space Industry report is now available!

In the backdrop of the ongoing war in the Middle East, we analyse the use and strategic importance of commercial dual-use space systems in modern conflict, and discuss how these are increasingly becoming targets of warfare. In addition, we provide updates on the latest developments in lunar exploration, including SpaceX’s recent pivot toward lunar infrastructure development and ongoing support for establishing orbital AI data centres.

In our Legal Review, we discuss the need for transparency in space operations in order to secure the basic principles of peaceful and safe uses of outer space, and analyse how Article XI of the Outer Space Treaty could be utilised.

As always, we would love to hear your thoughts on any of these issues!

The new US president has wasted little time pushing his agenda, from sweeping immigration reforms to threatening tariffs on imports, and stepping away from the Paris Climate Agreement (again).

Today, we take a quick look at how the Trump administration might influence international space relations and governance, especially given its ‚isolationist‘ approach and the growing rivalry in the commercial space industry.

iSpace and Firefly Aerospace launched their commercial lunar landers this week, on a shared SpaceX Falcon-9 launch, marking another significant moment for the commercial space economy.

iSpace are making their second attempt and will carry their own TENACIOUS lunar rover. The company made history this week in receiving permission under Luxembourg’s Space Resources Law to collect lunar regolith and transfer ownership to NASA. The mission could set a historic precedent in legislating for commercial resources extraction and ownership, an increasingly contested legal issue at international level. iSpace will also send a water electrolyzer, an artistic Moonhouse by a Swedish artist and a deep space radiation probe from Taiwan.

Firefly are launching for the first time, contracted under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payloads Services programme (CLPS). The company are sending payloads from Honeybee Robotics, who are aiming to both measure the heat from the from the interior of the Moon, as well demonstrate lunar soil collection techniques using their PlanetVac gas blasting technology. It will also carry NASA’s lunar dust mitigation demonstration and test GNSS satellite connectivity in a project with the Italian Space Agency, among others.

It’s an exciting time for lunar exploration. As soon as late February we may also expect another commercial mission from Intuitive Machines, who made history last year in becoming the first private company to successfully land on the Moon...

Last week, we were honoured to participate in the UN Conference on Space Law and Policy and listen to experts from government, agencies, industry, and academia share their insights on a wide range of issues, including debris mitigation and remediation, information-sharing, implementing national space law strategies, and initiatives toward dark and quiet skies.

Many thanks to everyone involved. It is through forums such as these that we can learn, contribute, and help build capacity toward establishing the sustainable and responsible use and development of outer space.

This week are back to our regular routine, and our space industry news roundup & analysis is now available!

NASA have requested Blue Origin and SpaceX for lunar rover and habitat delivery missions, while we may see another commercial race to the Moon at the start of next year, and more...
