What changes in our ways of working can I expect from OKR?

In a nutshell – you will go from just setting goals to actually achieving them.
The first and often most surprising benefit is that OKR will make your current state very transparent. You’ll gain a very deep understanding of how group dynamics are influencing performance and find out what has been holding you back. You will become more focussed on the few things that will deliver a long-term benefit instead of being distracted by the day-to-day noise.
You will find over time that your goals become both more specific and more powerful. You will not only align your highest priorities with other teams, but also learn how to collaborate better and how to stop doing all the other unimportant stuff (which can be more challenging than you think).

We talk about change all the time in the office. We try and make 'amazing' happen all the time and enjoy the challenges that inevitably brings.

In our latest short video, Tom Williams talks about how his former team, Harlequins, made an incredible decision to change tactics at the mid-point in the season. This change inspired their players and they went from being a team with a 50% win ratio to winning the Premiership.

The same principles apply to business – understanding your current situation, staying true to your philosophy and empowering your people to make decisions under pressure.

Our strategic goal-setting framework has served us well since the 90s. Convince me why we should change that winning system? -
When I started working in the automotive industry in the mid-nineties, I became a Total Quality Management Champion, training new employees all about visions, (...) and critical success factors. In this approach, strategy was the reserve of the Board Members, who locked themselves in hotels for a week to (...) spend time thinking strategically at the end of each year.
The world around us has changed and continues to keep adapting at a seemingly ever-increasing rate, such that strategy is no longer about ex*****on and much more about discovery.
There are so many variables to consider and re-consider, that we can no longer simply base a whole year’s work on a few people’s clever ideas. OKR gives strategy to the people, which is immensely more powerful.

Change your thoughts and you can change your world! - "I feel really passionately about seizing any opportunity that presents itself. With age this has become more prevalent. You will often hear me say ‘if you don’t ask, you don’t get.’ This is definitely the sales person in me! With a career in sales I’m only too aware that it has its ups and downs. Rejection and f ailure is always tough. That being said it’s essential, to use every ‘no’ as an opportunity to learn. I use every ‘no’ as an opportunity to analyse and adapt, whilst always staying true to my core belief that by focussing on the few important things, the outcome will take care of itself."

What's it like for you to have a weekly team meeting or Check-in?

Nick describes in his book, why Friday morning works much better from his perspective, whilst Monday morning is a really bad time.

"On what day and at what time should we meet? - On that iterative journey to your team’s Check-in sweet spot, you might have to test a few things to find the right time for you.

I find that Friday morning meetings work well, because people can track their progress on Thursday night and still have Friday afternoon to consider what to do with new information.

Monday afternoon in contrast has the benefit of having the whole week ahead to focus and deliver. However I find people often need time on Monday morning to get urgent issues resolved or, if they’ve practiced a mentally healthy offline weekend, to fully reconnect with the work you did last week."
