THE PRINCE OF ORANGE - A brief reign in the Dutch Golden Age, a striking 17th-century portrait, likely depicting Prince William II

Painted by Pieter Harmensz. Verelst (1618-after 1668), this oil on panel is signed and dated 1649. The sitter is plausibly identified as William II (1626-1650), supported by comparison with portraits by Gerrit van Honthorst and by the orange sash, a reference to the House of Orange.

William II became Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic in 1647 at just 21 years old, entering a position of significant political authority during a period of tension between the Stadtholder and the provincial estates. His sudden death in 1650, at the age of 24, brought his short rule to an abrupt end and left his son William III to be born posthumously, later becoming King of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

AN EXPRESSIVE BAROQUE CRUZIFICTION GROUP This finely carved sculptural ensemble depicts the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary fainting in the arms of Saint John, while Mary Magdalene kneels in devotional grief. Executed in hardwood with original polychromy, the figures are defined by refined modelling, expressive physiognomies, and richly carved drapery. The surface treatment, at first glance, closely recalls terracotta, highlighting the sculptor’s mastery of material illusion.

The composition reflects the sculptural language associated with Giovanni Giuliani, noted for his terracotta bozzetti and intimate devotional groups produced in Lower Austria.

TWIN BACCHANTES IN SILVER crafted by Alexander Macrae, 1875 - This imposing pair of parcel-gilt Victorian silver cups, crafted by Alexander Macrae,
brings together ornamental refinement and narrative detail. Their surfaces are richly animated with foliage and meander motifs, framing oval reserves
in which battling Bacchantes unfold in dynamic relief. Opposite, an engraved coat of arms lends a heraldic counterpoint. Bearing the London hallmark with date letter “u” and the head of Queen Victoria, the cups weigh approximately 2335 grams.

FROM THE KUNSTKAMMER: A Silver Equestrian of Gustav II Adolf, Germany, possibly Augsburg, early 17th century, lot 501

Finely executed in partially gilt silver, this rare equestrian statuette depicts Gustav II Adolf of Sweden in armor, seated upright on a walking horse. He holds the reins in his left hand and a scepter in his right. The armor and elements of the harness are fire-gilt, while the horse, hands, and head remain in plain silver, creating a refined contrast of surfaces.

The figure was originally constructed with a screw mechanism allowing the head to be exchanged—an indication that such statuettes were conceived as modular courtly objects, adaptable to represent different rulers.

Only a small number of comparable equestrian statuettes of this type are known. Related examples are preserved in major collections such as the Green Vault and the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. Most depict Habsburg rulers, making the present representation of Gustav II Adolf particularly notable.
