In our previous blog episode "Need for Speed" we talked about the concept of selection gain as a measure of trait improvement in a population's average performance. To estimate the selection gain, breeders must understand the heritability of the trait, phenotypic variation, and selection intensity. In this episode, "Precision Play - The Art of Crop Makeover", we’ll take a closer look at selection intensity and how precision breeding supports it 🌱

🌾 Small breeding company, big ambitions?

For smaller breeding companies, improving selection through advanced data analysis can be challenging when internal resources, budgets, and bioinformatics expertise are limited. That’s where an integrated, full-service approach can help.

With BreedScope + CropCompass + xSeedScore, breeding teams can combine:
• Efficient data management
• Genomic prediction and advanced analysis
• Expert bioinformatics guidance
• A practical path toward adopting modern breeding technologies

The result? Faster technology adoption, better use of breeding data, and stronger insights to support improved selection decisions.

Modern breeding tools shouldn’t be limited to organizations with large internal bioinformatics teams.

🌾 How do you breed a crop for a climate that doesn't exist yet?

That's the core problem our CEO, Dr. Sebastian J. Schultheiss, unpacks in a new interview with HTGF, our investor since 2015.

The short version: our AI doesn't change genomes. It predicts which cross is worth making, combining genetics, environmental data, and field trials to flag top candidates before they're even planted. With AB InBev, this helped cut barley breeding time from 12 years to 5.

This builds on our recently closed €6.3M Series B, which we're using to expand the platform to more crops and grow our team.

A single reference genome can only show part of the picture 🧬 With , we use pangenomes to bring multiple genome assemblies into one shared reference space. This helps reveal structural variation and connect it with genomic and other omics data.

In our new live demo series, we take you inside Pantograph, step by step. Each short snippet focuses on one part of the platform and the genomic challenges it helps to solve.

🌱 Part 2: Pangenomes – When Pangenomes Become Handy
We look at just how much genetic diversity can be missed when relying on a single reference genome.

Pangenomes capture additional sequences, genes and structural variants that are not represented in the reference. This opens the door to understanding genetic variation that SNPs and traditional markers alone cannot explain.

🌾 Join Computomics at Euroseeds 2026 in Valencia (25–28 October) 🇪🇸

Every breeding season brings the same hard calls: which crosses deserve to move forward, which parent lines are worth keeping, and which trial sites still add value. Our Climate-Smart Breeding solutions bring together genomic, environmental, and predictive modeling data to help teams make these calls sooner - well before full field results are in. On the trait discovery side, Pantograph helps identify the genetic factors driving the performance traits that matter most.

Together, these solutions help breeders reduce risk, speed up genetic gain, and get climate-adapted varieties into growers' hands faster.

🌾 Years of breeding data. Buried potential.

Many breeding companies sit on vast historical datasets. Without structure, however, that data stays underused, and breeding cycles stay long.

CropCompass + ⨉SeedScore® turn raw historical data into a structured foundation. Predictive tools then speed up decisions. The result: faster, data-driven breeding - powered by data you already have.

Goodbye Leonie!
As a working student in the Pantograph team for the past 10 months, Leonie helped us better understand how biology influences the (Panto)graph topology. On her last day of work she also helped us appreciate orange and almonds pieces in dark chocolate, as she brought plenty of her favorite chocolate to go around 🍫

Good luck with your Master Thesis, and see you again, Leonie! 🤗

🌱 Computomics raises EUR 6.3 million to scale climate-smart plant breeding

We're excited to announce a Series B financing round led by Convent Capital Agri Food Fund, with continued backing from High-Tech Gründerfonds, MBG Baden-Württemberg, and Amathaon Capital.

As extreme heat and drought reshape harvests across Europe, breeders need faster answers than trial data alone can give. Our ×SeedScore® platform uses machine learning to predict how genotypes will perform under real-world climate stress. This helps breeders identify resilient, stable varieties years earlier.

This investment will accelerate commercial delivery of our climate-smart breeding platform to more breeding programs worldwide.

Thank you to our investors and team for backing this next chapter! 🚀

This operation benefits from support from the European Union under the InvestEU Fund.

🌱 Part 1: Pangenomes – An Introduction
We start with the foundation: why pangenomes matter. Instead of relying on a single linear reference genome, pangenomes combine multiple whole-genome assemblies. This creates a much broader view of genetic diversity and helps uncover variation that would otherwise remain hidden.

Plant breeding has entered a new era. DNA markers remain essential, but they are only one part of the picture. To develop resilient, high-performing crops, breeders need models that also understand environments, field performance, plant responses, and biological context. 🌱

Our latest Make Sense of Science blogpost explains the essence of a new study published on G3: why , combining genomics, enviromics, phenomics, omics, and pedigree data, is becoming critical for climate-smart breeding. By connecting these data layers, prediction becomes a decision-support system for identifying stable genotypes, prioritizing crosses, and preparing crops for future conditions.
