To mark the 180th anniversary of Marie Jaëll’s birth, WDR Zeitzeichen dedicates an episode to the French pianist, pedagogue and composer, exploring her remarkable career, her connection with Franz Liszt and the rediscovery of her music today.

Cellist Raphaela Gromes is one of the programme’s key interviewees, alongside musicologist Susanne Wosnitzka. Susanne Wosnitzka Their jointly authored book FORTISSIMA! is also cited as one of the episode’s principal sources.

The programme particularly highlights Gromes’ contribution to the rediscovery of Jaëll’s Cello Concerto:

On 9 August 2026, violinist Chouchane Siranossian appeared with the Venice Baroque Orchestra at the Festival de Torroella de Montgrí in Spain, presenting a programme exploring the extraordinary violin virtuosity of Antonio Vivaldi, Francesco Maria Veracini, Giuseppe Tartini and Pietro Locatelli. Ahead of the performance, Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia published an extensive interview with Siranossian by journalist Maricel Chavarría, in which she discussed the artistic concept behind the programme as well as her close collaboration with the Venice Baroque Orchestra and its founder, harpsichordist and conductor Andrea Marcon.

Describing the orchestra, Siranossian said:

“Working with the Venice Baroque Orchestra is a privilege—they have this music in their blood.”

She also emphasized the artistic trust she enjoys with the ensemble:

“With them, I know I can dare to do things. This is the repertoire I perform most, and it is where I continue to develop improvisation and many other aspects of my playing.”

Siranossian explained that the programme imagines a friendly “duel” between four of the greatest violin virtuosos of the early eighteenth century—Vivaldi, Veracini, Tartini and Locatelli—demonstrating that dazzling violin technique flourished long before Paganini. While highlighting each composer’s distinctive musical language, she stressed that Baroque virtuosity was never merely about speed, but also about expressive depth and the ability to move audiences.

On 26 July 2026, David Garrett brought his Del Gesù Club to Gstaad, culminating in the Club’s first-ever public concert as part of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival at the historic Church of Saanen. David Garrett Menuhin Festival Gstaad

Founded by Garrett in 2022, the Del Gesù Club brings together owners and players of violins by the legendary Cremonese maker Giuseppe Guarneri “del Gesù.” This year marked the Club’s fifth gathering, and for the first time, its closing concert was opened to the public as part of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival, offering audiences a singular opportunity to experience an extraordinary collection of historic instruments in concert.

Garrett led the evening, introducing the individual violins and performing six pieces himself. The concert featured 26 exceptional Cremonese instruments, including 21 Guarneri “del Gesù” violins, four Stradivari violins and a 1733 Carlo Bergonzi. Among them were instruments once associated with legendary violinists such as Yehudi Menuhin, Karol Lipiński and Johanna Martzy.

Reflecting on the Club and the shared passion at the heart of its annual gatherings, Garrett told The Strad: “It was like an open candy store. These meetings are perhaps my favourite two days of the year.”

The three-and-a-half-hour concert concluded with Garrett performing Schumann’s Träumerei, bringing a remarkable evening celebrating some of the world’s finest historic violins to a close.

They began the day with a duo recital, presenting the “FORTISSIMA” programme with works by Luise Adolpha Le Beau, Rebecca Clarke, Nadia Boulanger and others.

Later that evening, Raphaela Gromes joined the Hong Kong Sinfonietta under Christoph Po**en for the festival’s Farewell Gala at Marvão Castle, performing works by Pauline Viardot-Garcia in arrangements by Julian Riem. Hong Kong Sinfonietta Christoph Po**en

On 4 August 2026, 12-year-old pianist Antonio Pavan made a remarkable appearance at the Muse Salentine Festival in Alessano, southern Italy. Held in the intimate setting of the historic Palazzo Sangiovanni, the concert was completely sold out, with all 140 seats booked within just a few hours.

Now in its 16th edition, the Muse Salentine Festival brings internationally renowned musicians and outstanding young talents to the intimate setting of Palazzo Sangiovanni in Alessano.

At his sold-out solo recital, Antonio Pavan impressed the audience with his refined touch, crystal-clear sound and remarkable musical maturity. The 12-year-old pianist, a recent winner of the Jeune Chopin Prize in Lugano, performed the entire programme from memory and was called back for two encores. Pavan concluded the evening with his own composition, The Stream (Il torrente), followed by a work by Rachmaninoff.

On 31 July 2026, the Dresdner Festspielorchester and Concerto Köln, under the musical direction of Kent Nagano, presented the Prologue and Act I of Richard Wagner’s Götterdämmerung in a condensed two-hour version at the Ravello Festival in Italy. Performed in the gardens of Villa Rufolo, closely associated with Wagner’s visit to Ravello, the concert formed part of The Wagner Cycles, a project of the Dresdner Musikfestspiele.

Based on musicological research and historically informed performance practice, The Wagner Cycle explores Wagner’s original sound world. Following performances in Dresden and guest appearances in Lucerne, Paris, Prague, and Ravello, the project will continue with further performances in the coming months.

On 20 July 2026, Concerto Köln, led by concertmaster Evgeny Sviridov, joined recorder virtuoso Max Volbers for a performance at the Herrenchiemsee Festival, presenting a programme featuring works by George Frideric Handel, Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, Giuseppe Sammartini, Antonio Vivaldi, and the as-yet unidentified London composer known as Mrs Philarmonica.

The programme took audiences on a musical journey through different regions of Europe, highlighting the distinct national stylistic traditions of the Baroque. With stylistic authenticity, expressive musicianship, and remarkable ensemble playing, it became a tribute to the shared cultural heritage of the Baroque.

As part of the 2027 OAcademy Global Artist Diploma, cellist Raphaela Gromes will lead her Cello Studio. Applications are now open for a select group of cellists to join the six-month programme.

Four Fellows will study with Gromes through personalized mentorship while participating in globally accessible masterclasses, interpretive studies, leadership training, mindset development, portfolio building, communication and entrepreneurship modules, brand development, and opportunities for in-person residencies.
