Radix Co-op has recently published a translation of Ahmad Nabil’s ‘Hidden Companions: Paranormals from the Old City of Jerusalem’:

The Old City of Jerusalem comes alive in Ahmad Nabil’s Hidden Companions, a testimonial and visual archive of Palestinian folklore.

A man wakes every day to find coins under his pillow, a young lonely girl strikes up a friendship with a spectral voice, a veiled woman changes form to delude ordinary senses, a petite girl in all black breaches a group of young girls returning from a wedding, a goat and her two kids draw an unsuspecting young man into a hidden room, a group of curious boys conjure the spirit of Marx. Jinns and ghouls, guardians and tricksters, wizards and possessors. In the Old City of Jerusalem, the Unseen beings are a natural element of everyday life.

With rich, vivid descriptions and in stunning illustrations, Ahmad Nabil weaves a literary account of paranormal stories: held, shared in whisper networks, relayed over conversations, and passed down as inheritance. This English translation by Fatema Alhashemi traces a captivating world largely unseen in popular narrative.

***Publications***

As part of Cambridge University Press‘ Elements in New Religious Movements Series, ENSIE President Mark Sedgwick has written a concise and affordable paperback on the topic of New Religious Movements (NRMs) in Islam.

New Religious Movements (NRMs) have emerged periodically from the formative period of Islam to the present day. This Element considers a representative sample, organized by chronological period and then by type. In earlier periods, particular features of Islam either encouraged or discouraged the emergence of NRMs. Modernity brought new conditions that led to new types of NRM, the focus of this Element. Initially, NRMs arose in resistance to modernity or in support of it. Then came NRMs adjusted to the age of mass modernity. The Element also examines Western NRMs of Islamic origin or coloring. All these NRMs are understood in terms of their relationship with the dominant religious community, the host society, and political authority, as well as the novelty of their beliefs and practice.

Time flies, and it has already been almost two weeks since our ENSIE 7 conference in Málaga, Spain! Thus, it is about time for a short recap:

After a short introduction by ENSIE President Mark Sedgwick, Day 1 focused on the boundaries of the Human as well as on the topic of Jinn. Notably, Amina Inloes told us where Jinn live (spoiler: this depends on whom you ask!). The afternoon saw a fantastic dialogue between academia and practitioners, led by Antonio de Diego González and Soledad Davies, among the stunning setting of the University’s botanic garden.

The theme of Jinn continued through Day 2, featuring Taylor M. Moore on the Jinn and 20th-Century Egyptian healing practitioners. The noon and afternoon saw sessions on angels and demiurges, “the invisible” and finally, a visit to the digital realm with Renasha Khan. Day 2 concluded with a session on South Asia, featuring Annalisa Bocchetti and Nur Sobers-Khan.

Day 3 saw a wide array of different topics, from the fringes of the Islamic world with Amila Buturović, Jannis Kostelnik, and Tommaso Previato to “classical” esoteric literature with José Bellver and Bennet Alberth and the deeply spiritual and mystic, represented among others in contributions by Antonio de Diego González and the Ali Qadir & Tatiana Tiaynen-Qadir. In the last session, Diana Lunkwitz led us into the surprisingly entangled worlds of Islam and Anthroposophy.

It is certainly not an understatement to say that Day 4 with its excursion to Córdoba was the high point of the conference. ENSIE is greatly indebted to Antonio de Diego González for organising a flawless and fascinating daytrip and to Hamdi Tawfiq Hamdi Abu-El-Samen for a guided tour of the mosque that left no questions unanswered. The day in Córdoba concluded with a thought-inspiring visit to the mansion of Salma al-Taji al-Farouki, which houses, among others, a museum on alchemy.

We would like to thank everyone who presented, attended, or otherwise made ENSIE7 unforgettable! We are looking forward to seeing you again for our virtual conference in 2027 and our next in-person conference in 2028!

The Fondazione Giorgio Cini is looking forward to receiving abstracts for a multidisciplinary conference on “Religion after Longevity: Between Religious Traditions and Post-Humanism”, to be held in their magnificent location in the Venice lagoon from 1-3 December, 2026.

Deadline for abstracts is 30 May 2026. All information and how to submit available at https://www.cini.it/en/cini_news/religion-after-longevity-between-religious-traditions-and-post-humanism/.

The conference is organized jointly by the Centre for Comparative Studies of Civilisations and Spiritualities (Fondazione Giorgio Cini), The Centre for History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents – HHP (University of Amsterdam), the Center for the Study of World Religions (Harvard Divinity School), and the Centre for Environmental Humanities – NICHE (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice).

This conference will begin by examining how religious traditions have historically been connected to the care of both the body and the soul. We will discuss religious rituals, practices, dietary norms, and activities that promote not only graceful aging but also spiritual purification. Secondly, the conference will consider how aging societies influence religious beliefs and practices. Thirdly, we will address how religions accompany individuals through the process of dying. Finally, we will examine emerging religious and quasi-religious movements that challenge the very concept of death, proposing transhumanist approaches to life extension.

***Online Lectures***

The Centre for the Study of Islam at the University of Exeter invites you to the next session of its Monday Majlis, taking place on Monday 27th April, 2026!

Featuring Eliza Tasbihi, the Majlis is entitled “Hidden in Plain Sight: Ismāʿīl Anḳaravī’s Commentary on ‘Book Seven’ of Rūmī’s Mathnawī". Through untouched manuscripts, the contribution examines the apocryphal Book Seven of the Mathnawī, which has never been studied.

Why was it added to Rūmī’s Mathnawī? What were its implications in the Mevlevī centers in 17th-century Ottoman society or in Persian speaking societies in India and Iran? Was Book Seven added on the Indian subcontinent or in the Ottoman Empire?

***Hybrid Seminars***
On very short notice, SOAS University of London offers an exciting hybrid seminar tomorrow, April 16, 6-8pm GMT. Featuring Farouk Yahya and convened by Anna Contadini, it focuses on the motif of the Seven Magical Signs, a set of seven symbols believed to represent the Most Exalted Name of God. They are discussed in texts on magic such as the Shams almaʿarif al-kubra and appear on amulets and various talismanic objects.

This seminar will examine the tradition of the Seven Magical Signs in Southeast Asia from the perspective of both texts and objects. In doing so it aims to investigate possible relationships between the textual tradition and material culture, which may help shed further light into the connections between theory and practice in the occult sciences within Muslim societies.
