Part 6 🌿

Final part. And possibly the most honest look at Agoprene yet.

Celine will be the first to admit she’s a bit of a hoarder. Every piece of equipment she’s ever bought is still here, including what appears to be a clothing dryer. It was an experiment to see if it could dry the foam efficiently. It did the job at the time.

This all started in a student kitchen with a spatula and an idea. Now there’s an automated pilot line in the Netherlands. You can trace the whole journey just by looking around the barn. Which, when you think about it, is a pretty good way to end the series!

Part 5 🖐️

Welcome to Barkåker. Not the fanciest place, but this is where all the recipes are tested before they head down to the pilot line in the Netherlands. It’s where new ideas get tried out and the material gets developed further.

Celine calls it the heart of the business. And there’s something fitting about that, because just down the road is where her great-great-grandfather founded Korni in 1919, a Norwegian flatbread factory. Running her own business has been Celine’s dream since she was a kid, so having the lab this close to where it all started for him feels like a pretty good spot to be.

Part 4 🌿

Celine’s words, not ours: «I’m becoming a foam nerd.»

To be fair, it’s hard not to when you realise how much of your daily life is made of this stuff. Your sofa. Your mattress. Your running shoes. All petroleum, and all nearly impossible to recycle!

Agoprene foam is made from carbon that’s already in the cycle. No new carbon added. And unlike traditional foam, it can actually be recycled when you’re done with it.

Part 3 🌿

Turns out the best machines for making our foam aren’t in the foam industry. They’re in the food industry!

When your raw materials are seaweed and minerals, petrochemical machinery isn’t exactly designed with you in mind. So, we looked at the food industry instead, and ended up in the Netherlands, which is apparently leading the way in food machine technology. We didn’t know that either, for what it’s worth.

Part 2 ✌️

We didn’t have a marketing budget. Still don’t, really. But apparently making foam from seaweed is enough to get people talking.

WIRED picked it up. BBC, WEF and Monocle did too. And then Celine’s inbox got a bit out of hand.

What followed was a lot of flights, a lot of factory floors, and a lot of conversations about foam with people she’d never expected to meet.

Not a bad outcome for a company that’s never had a marketing budget.

An award from your hometown hits a little different 💚

Very grateful to receive this year’s entrepreneur award in Tønsberg, the place where a big part of the Agoprene journey started.

Thank you to the jury, and to everyone who has supported a very small seaweed foam company from Barkåker along the way.

During her speech, Celine thanked her dad for teaching her that there are seven workdays in a week, not five.
We suspect that mindset has had something to do with all of this.

Very grateful, and looking forward to putting Agoprene on the map in 2026.

Will we run out of seaweed?
Short answer: No.

Seaweed is one of the fastest growing organisms in the ocean. Some species can grow up to half a metre per day.

It doesn’t need farmland, fresh water or fertiliser. Just the ocean doing its thing.

And when it’s grown and harvested responsibly, it keeps coming back season after season.

Will it replace everything petroleum based? No.
That’s not what we stand for either.

So no. The sea is not about to run out of seaweed.

Which is fortunate, considering we’re trying to turn quite a lot of it into foam.

Who’s actually going to write a whole post about foam if we don’t? Exactly.

We know. Foam isn’t exactly a hot dinner party topic. But it’s doing a lot more heavy lifting than you’d think.

Take your mattress. Every night, your body releases a surprising amount of heat and sweat (don’t worry, it’s a human thing). The reason it doesn’t turn into a damp archive of old nights is actually down to smart engineering. This is because of «open cells», which are tiny, connected structures that let air move through so moisture can dry out. It’s basically a silent ventilation system.

Then there’s your bike helmet. That foam is literally designed to fail. It’s engineered to crush and be destroyed on impact, taking the hit so your brain doesn’t have to. It’s a one-time hero.

And in your running shoes? On a 10K, the foam is compressed up to 15,000 times. Whether those shoes still feel «alive» or totally flat after a few months is just down to polymer chemistry and how those tiny cells handle being squashed.

Maybe it’s not that boring after all.

Meet Shaun, Agoprene’s Chief Operating Officer!

Shaun is the kind of person every team hopes to have.

He rolls up his sleeves and does whatever needs to be done. No task is too small or too messy. From production and raw material testing to customer meetings and IP, he wears more hats than most. He also brings a strong focus on scientific thinking and Jidoka, helping the team build processes that are both robust and thoughtful.

He has quite literally driven raw material back and forth between Norway and the Netherlands more times than we can count. Just to reduce risk and keep things moving.

Shaun transformed our production process from day one. What started with buckets and cement mixers quickly became a scalable, automated process that changed everything.

But just as important as what he builds is how he shows up. Calm, steady and always there for the people around him. A grounding presence when things get intense.

We are incredibly lucky to have him💚
