📢 CALL FOR PAPERS

How did people living along the Nile Valley express identity through dress, adornment, and the body?

The Fashioning Sudan and Nubia International Conference 2027 invites papers exploring clothing, jewellery, hairstyles, cosmetics, tattooing, and other forms of bodily adornment in Sudan and Nubia across time.

Bringing together archaeological, historical, and interdisciplinary perspectives, the conference will explore how dress and body practices shaped personal and collective identities across the region.

The programme will include presentations, discussions, a keynote lecture, hands-on demonstrations, and an exhibition celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Sudan and Nubia.

More information and submission details coming soon. For details please see the link in our bio.

🧵 New article alert 🗣️

Our PI Elsa Yvanez has published a new paper in Dotawo: A Journal of Nubian Studies.

The article examines textile tools such as spindle whorls and loom weights from Tila Island and the city of Meroe, exploring what their archaeological contexts reveal about textile production in the Meroitic Kingdom. By reconnecting these tools to their find spots, the study highlights how spinning and weaving were integrated into both domestic spaces and broader urban activity areas in ancient Sudan.

Ostrich eggshell beads were widely used in clothing and bodily ornamentation in ancient Sudan and Nubia. Working this material required time, skill, and close physical engagement, reminding us that garment production was a deeply sensory practice.

🪡Textiles and Leather in Ancient Nubian Dress🧵

In a recent article for The Project Repository Journal, Fashioning Sudan PI Elsa Yvanez examines the relationship between textile and leather embroidery in ancient Nubian dress, with a particular focus on the Meroitic period.

Drawing on material from sites such as Karanog, Gebel Adda, and Sai Island, the article explores how shared decorative motifs point to close technical and visual connections between different craft traditions, contributing to broader discussions of dress, production practices, and material culture in ancient Nubia.

Day 4 – Dyeing and planning 🗒️
On the fourth day of Leather Summer Camp, dyeing and garment planning were carried out. Sheepskin was dyed blue 🔵 in connection with the experimental reconstruction of the Mis Island blanket. At the same time, the striped structure of the Kerma-period skirt was designed, and sewing trials were conducted using artificial tendons. These steps prepared the materials for the final stage of reconstruction. 📌This post is part of our five-part series on Leather Summer Camp — next up, we bring the panels together into a reconstructed garment.
