𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗶𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀.

We have all been there. The workshop was a success, the walls are covered in "Post-its" full of critical risks and brilliant solutions. Then, everyone goes home.

Two weeks later, those sticky notes are just paper in a bin.

𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗪𝗘’𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗔 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺

Great progress for RWE as the first Vestas turbines have now been installed at the Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm in Germany.

This is an important milestone for the project and another step forward in the build-out of offshore wind capacity in the German North Sea. The Nordseecluster is set to play a key role in delivering clean renewable energy and supporting Europe’s green transition.

The installation phase is always a significant moment in any offshore wind project, where planning, coordination, operations, and strong collaboration across the supply chain come together offshore.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁.

You can have the most beautiful slide deck in the world. You can have a 5,000-line Gantt chart that shows every bolt being tightened on time.

But has a PowerPoint presentation has never installed a jacket in a 2-meter swell?

The gap between a plan and ex*****on is where the money is lost.
We don’t do "presentations." We do rehearsals.

We take the plan off the screen and test where it has to take physical space, critical questions, and human error.

If your plan only works on a screen, it doesn't work.

Famous Last Words ❗

Today we had a bit of fun with the concept known as “Hindsight bias”.

Hindsight bias is the sixth of 10 behavioral bias affecting project management.

Hindsight bias affects project managers by making them think of past events as more predictable than they were. In effect, this means they overestimate the quality of their own judgment. This usually occurs in relation to negative outcomes which is a manifestation of another bias called “negativity bias” that causes people to tend to focus more on negative outcomes of events.

Hindsight comes in three different types which can occur at the same time or individually.

1. Memory distortion: This is a misremembering of one's earlier judgments.

2. Inevitability: Using cause-and-effect to explain events. “This had to happen.”

3. Foreseeability: It is easy to understand something after it has happened. This is when we think we were able to understand all along, but we only understand it because now after the fact we have all the information

Hindsight bias can cause project managers asses the past erroneously, because they have a flawed perception of their ability to predict outcomes. Furthermore, having the “I knew it all along” type of hindsight bias can cause a project manager to fail to properly reflect on lessons learned.

Project management tip of the day ⭐:

Perceiving negative outcomes as more predictable than they can lead to flawed assessments of the past.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝗮 𝗥𝗼𝗖 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹?

Not at the very start of planning. Not the week before mobilisation. The sweet spot is in between.

You need enough planning done that the sequence, the contractors, and the interfaces are tangible, not stilljust a plan. And you need enough time left before construction that whatever the RoC Drill surfaces can actually be acted on, not just noted for the post-mortem.

So: Too early and there is nothing concrete to rehearse. Too late and the findings have nowhere to go.

The right moment is when the plan exists but the heavy lifting is not yet underway!

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲.

The plan gets documented and approved. The team mobilises and executes.

Between those two moments, the rehearsal that turns an approved plan into a shared understanding, almost never happens.

That gap is where the cost curve lives as a clash found in a workshop costs nothing. The same clash found offshore can cost the whole campaign.

If your project has Phase 01 and Phase 03 firmly scheduled but no Phase 02, that is not a plan, that is a hope.

𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺

The Inch Cape Offshore Limited Wind Farm has reached an important construction milestone with the installation of 54 monopiles, meaning the project off the Scottish coast is starting to take shape.

These foundations will support the project’s offshore wind turbines and represent a major step in transforming the development from planning into physical infrastructure at sea.

Monopile installation is a highly coordinated phase, requiring strong collaboration across engineering, marine operations, logistics and project management.

Milestones like this for one, highlight the scale and complexity behind delivering offshore wind projects but also the expertise needed to keep them moving safely and efficiently.
