Relax. Pump the brakes.

SLOW DOWN! Allocate sufficient time to the preparation of your presentation. Don't leave it to the last minute. Good work takes time. Respect the process.

SLOW DOWN! Many people tend to speak too quickly when they're nervous. Slowing down can make you appear and sound more confident and authoritative.

SLOW DOWN! When describing a complex or technical topic, slowing down can help your audience follow and understand your message. Avoid jargon and take the time to explain concepts in plain language.

SLOW DOWN! When sharing personal anecdotes or stories, slowing down can help you connect with your audience on an emotional level. Create a sense of intimacy and help your audience relate to your message by taking time to set the scene, describe the characters, and build suspense.

SLOW DOWN! A well-placed pause is more powerful than words themselves. Use pauses to build tension, add emphasis, or give your audience time to reflect.

SLOW DOWN! When fielding questions from your audience, slow down to ensure that you're fully comprehending the question and answering it effectively. Taking time to gather your thoughts can help you deliver a clear and concise response, rather than rushing to answer and potentially causing confusion.

Crushing self-doubt, shining authentically 🌟

As a public speaker, it's common to feel like a fraud, like you don't belong on the stage and that you're not worthy of the attention you receive.

This feeling is known as imposter syndrome and it affects even the most successful and accomplished speakers.

But why does this happen? It's often due to comparing ourselves to others, internalising negative self-talk, and placing undue pressure on ourselves to always be perfect.

In other words, it's all in our heads and has no basis in the real world.

The good news is that you can overcome imposter syndrome!

1️⃣ Start by acknowledging and accepting your feelings, reframing negative thoughts and focusing on your strengths and achievements.

2️⃣ Develop a healthy response to making mistakes.

3️⃣ Surround yourself with a supportive network and seek feedback from people you trust.

Remember, everyone experiences self-doubt at times and it doesn't define your worth or ability to succeed.

Embrace your unique qualities and focus on delivering value to your audience. You got this! πŸ’ͺ🏼

Attention public speakers! πŸŽ™οΈ

As you prepare for your next presentation, it's important to not just focus on your content, but also the environment in which you'll be delivering your message.

Have you ever walked into a new speaking venue and felt nervous or unprepared? This could be due to a lack of familiarity with the space.

What if I told you that you can overcome these feelings by visualising your presentation space before you even step foot in the door? πŸ€”

Yes, you read that right!

Visualising your presentation space can help you feel more confident and in control. It allows you to plan and anticipate challenges you may face in the physical environment, such as poor lighting, awkward podium placement, or microphone issues.

So, here's what you should do:

1️⃣ Research the venue beforehand - look for photos or videos of the space and try to get a sense of its layout, stage, and seating arrangements.

2️⃣ Close your eyes and imagine yourself walking into the room, taking the stage, and delivering your presentation with confidence and ease.

3️⃣ Pay attention to any obstacles or distractions that may arise and think about how you can overcome them.

By visualising your presentation space, you'll be able to walk into your next speaking engagement with confidence and poise, ready to captivate your audience and deliver a powerful message.

Is this something you're likely to try? Do you already do this and have some tips to share? Let's have a conversation in the comments πŸ™‚

There's a set of skills you can't afford to not have in 2023 and beyond.

Unfortunately, many people don't develop these skills, to the detriment of their careers.

Don't neglect public speaking skills!

🎀 Connecting with audiences is the key to establishing credibility

🎀 The confidence it builds has far-reaching effects on your career

🎀 Effective presentations increase your visibility

➑ Don't reinvent the wheel. Realign it.

Top public speakers borrow techniques from theatre performers that were developed over centuries.

Their scaffold is performing art. They just fill it with science.

So, what can you learn from the theatre?

➑️ Focus on these skills:

Body language. Theatre performers are skilled in the use of nonverbal communication - posture, eye contact, hand gestures, positioning.

Timing and pacing. Theatre performances are carefully timed and paced to keep the audience engaged. Learn similar techniques to build tension and maintain interest in your presentation.

Vocal projection. Actors know how to project their voice to ensure that their message is heard and understood by everyone in the room.

➑ And these skills too:

Storytelling. Theatre performances are experts at telling engaging and compelling stories. Learn to convey the impact of your work in a way that is emotionally engaging and memorable.

Adaptability. Theatre performers are skilled at adapting to unexpected changes and challenges during a performance. The ability to think on your feet goes a long way when it comes to delivering effective presentations.

Empathy. Theatre performers are trained to understand and interpret the emotions and motivations of their characters, which can help you better understand and relate to your audience.

Let's pause to reflect on this.

When we work with clients to improve their public speaking skills, we always tell them that one of the most important things they can learn is when to say nothing at all.

A strategically placed pause in your speech is a powerful tool.

When you pause:

⏯ Your audience can process what you've said
⏯ You can create moments of suspense
⏯ You can eliminate unnecessary filler words like "umm, ahh, like" etc
⏯ You project confidence and credibility

So when should you pause?

β–ͺ️Pause before you start the presentation
β–ͺ️Pause to let the message sink in
β–ͺ️Pause to get your audience to reflect
β–ͺ️Pause for emphasis
β–ͺ️Pause before you answer a question
β–ͺ️Pause to signal that something important is coming

There's a growing movement in science and tech to reach more people in a meaningful way.

Presenting complex information is a challenge commonly faced by science and tech communicators.

Unfortunately, they're not always trained in the art of delivering inspirational presentations.

Contrast this with theatre performers, who are experts in connecting with audiences ....

🧠 Don't reinvent the wheel. Realign it.
The best science and tech communicators understand this relationship. They borrow techniques from the theatre that were developed over centuries. Their scaffold is performing art. They just fill it with science.

But what can you learn from theatre performers? πŸ€”

🎭 Become an expert in audience engagement 🎭
Actors are experts at communicating complex ideas and emotions to a wide variety of audiences. Their methods can help scientists and tech professionals to communicate their ideas effectively and persuasively, and reach more people.

🎭 Master nonverbal communication 🎭
Theatre performers are skilled in the use of body language to convey complex information to audiences. Adopting these methods of nonverbal communication can help science and tech professionals deliver their messages with greater accuracy and impact.

🎭 Be adaptable. Be agile 🎭
Theatre performers are skilled at adapting to unexpected changes and challenges during a performance. This agile mindset and the ability to think on your feet goes a long way when it comes to delivering effective science and tech presentations.

🎭 Become a great storyteller 🎭
Theatre performers are experts at telling engaging and compelling stories. Storytelling can help you convey the impact of your work in a way that is more emotionally engaging and memorable to the audience. Stories are recognisable patterns, in which we find meaning.

When used wisely, a well-constructed slide deck can significantly enhance your presentation

On the other hand, poorly made slides are distracting and can even be a source of confusion

Follow the 1-1-1 rule to make your slides work for you!

Do:
βœ… Allocate approximately ONE minute of presentation time for each slide

This is enough time for approximately 100 words - make them count!

βœ… Deliver ONE clear and distinct message with each slide

Use descriptive headings to communicate the key point or take-home message

βœ… Present ONE image (or a set of related images) on each slide

Include minimal text. Exclude dot-points!

Don't:
❌ Try to deliver too much information
❌ Fill the slide with text
❌ Read from your slides

This is one job they can't do (yet)!

Audiences don't respond well to robots. They crave a human connection.

Give your audience what they want - an enthusiastic and expressive presentation!

πŸ’Ž follow Resonate for insights and useful tips.

Why do we sound robotic when presenting?

πŸ€– It can happen when talking for a long time (20 minutes or longer)

πŸ€– Sometimes we sound robotic when we're not confident about the topic

πŸ€– Trying to sound too professional at the expense of being interesting

πŸ€– Reciting a speech that we've memorised

But how do you improve your delivery?

1. Drop the "business voice"
It stifles authenticity and freedom of expression. Basically, it's boring.

2. Reconnect with your real-world voice
It's the voice you use when speaking with friends, or telling a joke, or describing an exciting scene from a movie.

3. Emphasise the operative word
The operative word gives a certain connotation or tone to a sentence. It's the word you use to guide your listener to the important part of what you're saying.

Let those words become the natural peaks in the topography of your speech.

πŸ‘‹....πŸ‘‡πŸ‘Œ....✌

Your hands can speak volumes. But are they saying what you want them to say?

Hand gestures are a critical component of effective presentations - they emphasise and contextualise the spoken word

Unfortunately, many speakers don't pay enough attention to this aspect of their own body language

Consequently, they miss opportunities to help audiences understand, process, and remember their message

Level up your presentation skills with effective hand gestures that are:
πŸ‘‰ purposeful
πŸ‘‰ matched to what you're saying
πŸ‘‰ easy to interpret
