The two wounded Danish journalists, Stefan and Emil, are now back in Denmark after being safely evacuated out of Ukraine.

Last Saturday the Ekstra Bladet reporters were caught in gunfire while covering the conflict near the city of Okhtyrka. We are pleased that this highly complex extraction was a success, and are honoured that Guardian can ensure the safety and security of those who work tirelessly to ensure a free and independent media coverage of the tragic events currently unfolding in Ukraine.

We would like to thank all our partners involved for their incredible support throughout this evacuation.

In times where disinformation is increasingly used as a strategy of war, the work of journalists is vital. We are grateful for all the journalists who bravely carry out the crucial task of presenting the public with an honest and nuanced account of global issues, despite the high risk this work entails - and we at Guardian are honoured to be able to assist them in this cause.

On Sunday, the Burkinabè military dissolved the government and ousted President Roch Kaboré. The Burkina Faso coup is the latest insurrection in the Sahel region following successful attempts made in recent years in neighbouring Mali, Chad, and Guinea.

Over the past years, the security situation in Burkina Faso has become increasingly volatile, with growing Islamist attacks resulting in over 2,000 casaulties and more than 1.5 million internally displaced persons. Militants linked with the Islamic State (IS) have increasingly used the country’s borderlands as a base for operations in the wider Sahel region. Discontent in the Burkinabè army has progressively grown as the government has failed to allocate more resources to counter the rising threat of Islamist militants.

Following the Burkina Faso coup, it is possible that the resulting security vacuum will soon be filled by emboldened Islamists, which in turn could trigger increased migration from West Africa to Europe, threaten stability in neighbouring countries, and put international mining operations at risk.

On 9 January, the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) imposed new sanctions on Mali after the military government failed to propose a sufficient road map towards a return to civilian rule. Last year, the West-African country experienced its second coup d’etat in only two years.

The new sanctions entail a suspension of trade, flights, and a host of financial and commercial activities linked to the country, including the freezing of direly needed foreign aid. Additionally, all ECOWAS ambassadors were recalled to their countries of origin. While Western states have supported the initiative, Russia and China blocked a supportive statement from the UN Security Council, which points to their interest in collaborating with the government. Particularly Russia is alleged to be seeking greater influence in the Sahel country by negotiating security contracts between its infamous private military company Wagner Group and the transitional Malian government.

As a result of the sanctions, Mali is now politically and economically isolated. Protestors have since gathered to demonstrate against the sanctions and further unrest, especially in the capital city of Bamako, must be expected. The sanctions will make Mali even more unstable - on top of the already prevailing security challenges.

Violence in Nigeria’s northern Zamfara state last week has once again shed light on the volatile and unstable security situation across Nigeria, especially in its Northern states. After the military conducted airstrikes on hide-outs of bandits, which were declared terrorists by the Nigerian government, approx. 300 gunmen on motorcycles retaliated by rampaging through several villages in the Anka area, shooting residents and torching buildings. Based on the reports of local villagers, the total number of casualties surpassed 200.

Even though it is commonly perceived that Islamist groups like Boko Haram or Al-Shabaab pose the greatest threat in Nigeria, there are multiple security challenges that the country faces. Piracy along the coast, Biafran separatists in the South-East and South-South Regions, as well as conflicts between farmers, herders, and pastoralists across Nigeria continue to put civilians and international travelers at risk - be it through raids, attacks, or kidnappings.

According to a local security consultancy, there are more arms in the hands of non-state actors than law enforcement organizations. As parties and candidates prepare themselves for the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2023, security concerns are expected to play a major role - once again.

For more than a week, protests have been underway in Kazakhstan that started over the government’s plan to lower fuel subsidies and escalated into the largest popular uprising against the country’s authoritarian system it has ever experienced, including more than 164 casualties and thousands detained.

To curb the “terrorist” protests, President Tokayev had his cabinet resigned, withdrew the price hike, and declared a state of emergency - when this didn’t help, he ordered his troops to fire on protesters and requested help from Russia and other states from the military alliance Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). The Russians were quick to deploy a contingent of troops to secure key infrastructure and governmental sites, fuelled by fears that a successful revolution might result in an anti-Russian government in its direct “sphere of influence”.

Even though the main protests seem to be thwarted and access to the internet was re-established, it still remains in question whether the Russian troops will withdraw from Kazakhstan soon or build a permanent presence. Russia’s military presence could be used as leverage to deter an expansion of ties with both China and the U.S., which have heavily invested into projects in mineral-rich Kazakhstan.

2022 has arrived and we at Guardian are excited for what the new year has in store. As a company focusing on security risk management, we don’t want you to be unprepared for what’s there to come, so we compiled a list of what we’re watching - our Top 5 Risks for 2022.

👉 COVID-19, Omicron and other variants, and the impact on both the Global (vaccinated) North and (unvaccinated) South.

👉Technology that has the potential to disrupt and polarize societies - disinformation campaigns, influence of algorithms, digital governance.

👉Russia vs. the West - Russia demands a restructuring of the European security architecture.

👉Political instability around the globe, e.g., in Myanmar, Afghanistan, or Ethiopia.

👉Key elections to come: Libya, Lebanon, Philippines, U.S. Midterms, Brazil, France.

This list is far from being exhaustive, but should give you an indication of what might be relevant in 2022. If you feel like you want to improve your own or your company’s preparedness for the risks and uncertainties that loom around the corner, don’t hesitate to reach out! Shoot us a message at [email protected] and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible to make sure that appropriate measures to mitigate the effects of the new year’s risks and crises are in check.
