In early spring, balanced nutrition plays an important role in colony development.

Natural pollen and nectar sources are often limited or inconsistent at this stage. Because pollen is the main protein source for honey bees, it directly influences brood development, royal jelly production, and overall immune function.

During temporary pollen shortages, supportive feeding (such as BeeStrong) can help bridge nutritional gaps without forcing development beyond what conditions allow.

The goal is not rapid expansion, but steady growth in line with colony strength and environmental conditions. Balanced support in early spring helps lay the foundation for healthy brood, capable foragers, and resilient colonies throughout the season.

Spring doesn’t arrive all at once and neither does life inside the hive.

In March, colonies gradually shift from overwintering to early development. Brood activity and food consumption increase, and the first essential cleansing flights take place on warmer days.

During this transition, careful observation makes the difference. Monitoring feed reserves, watching flight activity when temperatures allow, and clearing the bottom board of winter from dead bees help maintain a healthy environment inside the hive.

Patience remains key. Waiting for stable, warm conditions before conducting the first full colony inspection supports steady development and avoids unnecessary stress.
