ENAH BERLIN - European Network Architecture for Health

In the very beginning of March, Triagonal partnered up with ENAH to ensure the success of this year’s symposium. Triagonal had the pleasure of co-hosting the evening event on the night before the symposium. Around 150 people took place in this festive and colloquial occasion, which – as an extra treat – took place in the Danish embassy. We also had the privilege of sharing some of our own ideas; not so much about wayfinding as about how we ensure that what we all do when designing healthcare facilities is embedded in principles like design thinking, user centeredness and empowerment.

A good design guide encompasses everything from user-behavioural characteristics, wayfinding systematics, graphic elements and product quality, to manufacturing requirements and installation guidelines – all tailored to each individual project. In other words, the ideal design guide provides you with what you need to go from concept to a materialised wayfinding system.

WAYFINDING AT POSTBYEN – THE NEW COPENHAGEN CENTRAL

We are excited to announce that Triagonal will start the new year with a great new placemaking project, Postbyen. The area has been under development over many years and is particularly interesting, as it hosts an interesting mix of housing, offices, hotels, public institutions and facilities, accentuating the need for intuitive, coherent and consistent wayfinding.

Artworks are not merely pleasing to the eye; they can also distract us when we are mentally challenged and have a calming effect on us. Moreover, research within architecture and environmental psychology shows positive effects of artworks in relation to orientation and navigation, and as landmarks in our cognitive maps.

One researcher, Muna Alibrahim puts it like this: ”[…] the environment has plenty of physical properties with the potential to decrease the users' dependence on signs, such as artistic landmarks that help users to distinguish the different places within the hospital from each other, and guide the users to find their destination, even if they can’t read the signs.” (Alibrahim 2019)

SPATIAL IDENTITY AND THE COGNITIVE MAP

When every street in a town or corridor in a hospital looks the same, the more you look for landmarks to help you find your way. You look for the tree you saw in front of certain red door, the playground you passed where the sound of playing children caught your ear or the special signage in remarkable colours in a typography you thought suited the houses of the area in a magical way. It’s all because spatial identity is a complex matter. We use our senses to their full in order to find our way, wherever we are, and we add layers upon layers to our inner cognitive map.

OUTDOOR WAYFINDING; A DIFFERENT SENSE OF SCALE

Triagonal is currently in the process of designing a new outdoor wayfinding system for Statens Serum Institut (SSI). SSI was founded in 1902 and ever since they have had the significant, national role of preventing and fighting infections, congenital diseases and biological threats, including most recently the COVID-19 pandemic. The campus site is located in Copenhagen and in addition to SSI itself the campus hosts a variety of functions, research centres and companies conducting important work including base research and studies, protocols for testing and monitoring of deceases to the production of vaccines.

Triagonal was approached to develop a wayfinding strategy and design for the complex campus site, composed of more than 50 buildings of different sizes, epoques and functionalities. Besides being a dynamic and multifunctional workplace, the campus hosts a wide range of different guests, including researches and development partners, suppliers and members of the press and various delegations. This multi-layered complexity calls for a wayfinding system that is flexible and adaptable to constant organizational development, at the same time as it contributes to a coherent and intuitive feel of the campus as a whole.

ONLINE USER TESTS IN A 3D MODEL

To continuously improve and test our wayfinding systematics and design, we always undertake user tests. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the studies for our project at New Aalborg University Hospital, NAU, one of the new super hospitals in Denmark the user tests were performed via video meetings, showcasing the wayfinding signage in a 3D model of the hospital.

Conducting user tests online using 3D models has both pros and cons. On our website we have shared a more detailed article about our experiences with online user testing. You can find it here: https://triagonal.info/insight/online-user-tests-using-3d-models-the-pros-and-cons/

MIDTTRAFIK - ROUTE MAPS FOR BUSES.

At the beginning of 2021, Triagonal was asked to create a new series of route maps for Midttrafik, the regional transport authority in Central Jutland. The design is based on the same visual information design Triagonal created for Aarhus Light Rail and Midttrafik in 2016-2017.

The design continues the characteristic visual identity and brand from Midttrafik, including diagonally angled illustrations of the routes. As the dissemination of information in a simple and easy-to-understand way was a key priority, the level of detail on the maps varies according to the number of routes and information displayed on each map. In addition, a number of regional landmarks have been added to the maps using bespoke iconography to help orient users.

The maps will be displayed in bus stop and online from the summer of 2021.
