Inspiring books for summer reading

If you find yourself with some free time this summer, we recommend these three books that will both teach you a lot and amaze with many stories of textiles, history and transformation.

The Fabric of Civilization -How textiles changed the world, by Virginia Postrel is a sweeping story that reveals how textiles have driven global innovation, economic development, and social change across millennia, shaping human civilization from prehistory to the present.

Rooted -How regenerative farming can change the world, by Sarah Langford, is a beautiful exploration of the challenges and transformations to regenerative farming. It is told through personal stories that highlight the resilience, innovation, and deep connection to the land among a new generation of farmers.

The Golden Thread: How Fabric Changed History by Kassia St. Clair is a fascinating book showing how textiles have shaped economies, cultures, technology, and societies across centuries—illustrating that textiles is a central force in the story of human civilization.

We spent some time processing what we learnt at the fashion summit.

Here are a few reflections that stayed with us:

𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙠𝙚𝙮
Federica Marchionni, CEO of Global Fashion Agenda, reminded us that sustainability is a marathon - not a sprint. It requires collective investment and a shift from what companies say to how they operate.

𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙨’ 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙚akter, Founder and Executive Director at Bangladesh Centre for Worker Solidarity, reminded us that dignity begins with a living wage. “If I have a living wage, my job is dignified”. Workers’ voices must be central in discussions on policy and regulation.

𝘾𝙞𝙧𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮 = 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙮
From Tommy Hilfiger to Veja, speakers emphasised that circularity isn’t just about environmental impact—it’s a business driver. Brands must embed the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles into their core business strategy.

𝘿𝙚𝙗𝙩 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙𝙣’𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙟𝙤𝙗
from the highlighted the reality for many migrant workers in the global fashion supply chain. They often pay high recruitment fees, up to $6,000—just to get a job. This traps them in debt and dependency. The solution? Shift the cost burden. Suppliers—not workers—must pay the recruitment brokers.

, author and documentary filmmaker, said that people connect to stories, not data. He believes that real change happens when the public truly understands the issues. Magnason notes that more information does not necessarily lead to action, but instead, people are motivated by hope rather than fear

Global Fashion Summit: Day 1
We’re attending the Global Fashion Summit, hosted by , in Copenhagen. After day 1, here are some themes and reflections that stayed with us:

Collaboration is key
Federica Marchionni, CEO of Global Fashion Agenda, reminded us that sustainability is a marathon - not a sprint. It requires collective investment and a shift from what companies say to how they operate.

Workers’ rights must be at the center
Kalpona Akter, Founder and Executive Director at Bangladesh Centre for Worker Solidarity, reminded us that dignity begins with a living wage. “If I have a living wage, my job is dignified”. Workers’ voices must be central in discussions on policy and regulation.

Circularity as a business model
From Tommy Hilfiger to Veja, speakers emphasised that circularity isn’t just about environmental impact - it’s a business driver. Brands must embed the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles into their core business strategy.

Debt shouldn’t be the price of a job
Shelly Heald Han from the Fair Labor Association highlighted the reality for many migrant workers in the global fashion supply chain. They often pay high recruitment fees, up to $6,000 —just to get a job. This traps them in debt and dependency. The solution? Shift the cost burden. Suppliers—not workers—must pay the recruitment brokers.

Eileen Fisher on timeless fashion and true sustainability
Eileen Fisher shared her lifelong commitment to creating clothes that last — not garments meant to be thrown away. She emphasized simplicity, comfort, and a deep respect for materials, preferring organic and regenerative fibers over synthetics. Her message to the industry was clear: ”I want the industry to be clean and sustainable.”

We look forward to day two of the summit!

Compliance. It is a scarily boring topic.

But it is crucial for ambitious fashion and textile brands that want to continue to grow and reach new customers and markets.

We were invited to talk about compliance at the last .asfb Member’s Breakfast.

So how is it possible to turn something complex and boring into something understandable and maybe even… engaging?

Rather than bore with the law, we turned it into a game that helped the audience understand where their brand was in relation to the legislation.

We made doing a quick compliance check as easy (and fun) as a game of “Bingo”!

Thank you for all the positive feedback from those who were in attendance!

We hope we helped you understand what you need to do, and the first steps you can take to ensuring you can continue your journey without having to worry about falling foul of regulations and legislation.

For those of you who missed out, get in touch and we can see if we can run the session for your brand.

FUTURE FABRICS EXPO in London hosted by was a positive surprise. The event featured more than 270 leading mills and suppliers, making it the world’s foremost marketplace for new innovations and responsibly manufactured textiles and materials.

The expo highlighted innovative practices in the textile industry, promoting responsible production and materials.

The seminars included some interesting discussions about regenerative agriculture, something we encourage brands to look into and support. Missing representatives from different raw materials as farms of sheep, kettle, cotton or linen, that we hope to hear more from at future events.

Scaling innovations faster remains a challenge, we hope that brands understand the need to invest in and support the companies that showcase their innovative solutions.
