Will you be sheepwalking this year?
Or will 2022 be the year where you stop following the herd?
Going down a different path doesn't have to be scary...

defines “sheepwalking” as something we do because we've been raised to be obedient... and because fear keeps us in line.

Stepping out of line doesn't mean you have to create a revolution.

It can be as simple as switching off our autopilot-powered tick-box-mentality and instead switching on our curiosity-fuelled creative brains.

In other words, all we need to do is think, question, explore and act.

What defines you?
Who you are. Or what you do...

Being defined by what you do might be a helpful shorthand, but it's limiting.

Each of us has SO much more to bring to the team table than our functional skills.

I know finance people who are great at selling a vision by telling compelling stories.

And often executive assistants bring the brightest ideas to brainstorming sessions.

Imagine if they'd remained tied to the remit of their roles?

The teams we work with (and the tasks we work on) deserve to benefit from every ounce of magic we are able to bring!

What do you focus on when creating a cross-functional team? A mix of skills? Or diverse mindsets?

If you are anything like me, you first think about people's functional skills. That's what cross-functional teams are about, right?

The role we play in teams is usually determined by our seniority, our job title and the function we work in. All of these are easy to identify, yet none of them explain what makes you unique … or indeed magical!

To define your real worth, and help you add maximum value to the teams you work with, you need to look beyond the traditional 'labels' for answers.

Rather than defining yourself by WHAT you do, instead start to understand HOW you think!

Understanding how you think will not only ensure you bring something unique to the team table, it will also help you unleash your full potential.

But how?

What are the clues for finding out how people think?

Here are a few helpful prompts…

- Do you always bring a fresh perspective to the team?
- Are you usually the one who challenges the status quo?
Then you probably bring Stimulator magic to the team.

- Do you easily spot opportunities other people might miss?
- Can you synthesise a lot of information into the most salient points?
Then you might be the Spotter within the team.

- Are you good at making complex things simple?
- Does it excite you to make the team's abstract ideas concrete?
Then you could be the team's Sculptor.

- Do you always define the wider context at the start of something new?
- Are you the one who drives the team towards reaching conclusions?
Then you are most likely the Selector within the group.

- Are you good at enriching discussions by bringing differing points of view together?
- Do you become the one who nurtures and protects team dynamics?
Then you are probably a Supporter that brings the team together.

To find out your natural preference across 5 different team roles - Stimulating, Spotting, Sculpting, Selecting and Supporting - simply complete the Creative ID® psychometric assessment.

The best cross-functional teams I've worked with have been powerful because of their diversity.

Sometimes the irony of a situation hits you right in the face!
This was one of those moments...

My daughter is ill. Today is her third day at home.

Fortunately she is very rarely ill.

And fortunately I run my own business. So unless I'm faced with a pressing client-led deadline, I can decide how to spend my time (which this week is with her...)

Being ill can feel exciting. At least at first. You get to stay at home, in your pyjamas, snuggling under the duvet (my daughter and I both!)

The usual norms fall by the wayside.
Chocolate for breakfast? Yes! It's good for the throat.
iPad before noon? Of course! Why not?!

But it very quickly becomes boring and you have to think of things to do. And when you're ill, the scope is pretty limited. So you need to be creative.

My daughter loves it when I tell her stories from when she was a baby.
And because she is born in the digital age, many of these stories are captured visually, and not just in my mind.

Flicking through my phone looking at photos from her first year of life, we found this one.

Sunna is learning to read, so she asked: "What does PRIORITY mean?"

How ironic!

I couldn't help laughing, but then said: "Priority is what we're doing right now... sitting here focusing on getting better."

I've always found prioritising difficult. I want to do it all!
But when you don't have a choice, it suddenly becomes easy.

Ironically, being stuck at home with a sick child also creates a strange sense of freedom...

Freedom to focus on what's important.
Freedom to block everything else out and be fully present in the moment.
Freedom to let first things come first.

Work wise, this week will be a wipe out. The priorities on the To Do list have all been relegated... ready for a roll-over across to next week.

And right now?

I'm prioritising writing this whilst Sunna is sleeping soundly next to me :-)

If you were the manager of a football team, would you focus mostly on the player or the pitch?

It's no-brainer in football, so why isn't it the same in business?!

Processes provide the framework for your teams to operate within.
They define the steps you’ll take to get from A to B.
And they ensure everyone plays to the same set of rules.

Processes are tangible - they can be explained in a PowerPoint.
So unsurprisingly, processes sit firmly in the corporate comfort zone.

And it’s why they become the focus of attention when companies want to innovate in the pursuits of transformational change.

Yet real change happens through people, not processes!

But people don’t fit neatly into a PowerPoint slide.
People are diverse and unpredictable creatures with minds of their own.

Unfortunately, people are also the magic ingredient that fuels winning businesses.

So if you want to win through innovation, you need to crack the people code.

And this is exactly what our Creative ID® psychometric tool helps you do!

If you work for an innovation-hungry company or need to create transformational change, we offer a FREE 1-hour diagnostics session.

When does a wrong turn take you to the right place?

Last Sunday we took a wrong turn... and ended up here!

We had decided to eat lunch by the beach.

Sundays are always busy, so we booked a table to secure a place.
But we never made it!

We took a wrong turn and ended up in the neighbouring town. A place we'd heard of, but never been to.

Usually we'd stick to our plan and get back on the right path. But we were hungry.

So when a car pulled out of it's parking spot, we decided to take it.

Two minutes later, the beach opened up ahead of us.
Beautiful. And totally unexpected.

And it felt even more special because it wasn't where we were meant to be.

On our drive back home, I started to wonder...
• How can we create more space for chance encounters and maybe even encourage happy accidents?
• What other 'mistakes' in my life have in fact been gateways that led me towards alternative destinations?
• When is a wrong turn in fact the right turn?
• What would it take for us to value serendipity as much as we seem to need certainty?

Every Monday is a new beginning. And today I'll start the week reflecting on these thoughts.

Let's see where it takes me!

Do you ever feel the need to hide your creative side at work?

Whether you're a lawyer or accountant, work in HR or lead of team of supply chain specialists; unless your profession belongs to one of the 'creative industries' or you have the word 'creative' in your title, I'm pretty sure you've sometimes had to tone down your creative talents in order to keep your professional facade intact.

But how ridiculous is that?

We want to innovate and create disruptive solutions.
We need to be agile and embrace change.
We want to future-proof our businesses... and ourselves!

So why do we feel the need to sometimes suppress our innate creativity?

Being creative doesn't get you promoted.
Being focused and achieving results does.

But why do we have to choose?

Why can't we do both?

Magic happens when creativity drives business results!

Do you know what the sunset tastes like?

Neither did I…Until the other day after dinner when my daughter said: “Let’s eat the sunset!

Eating the sunset feels as magical as it sounds
As magical as the life-loving mind of my 7-year-old.

I love her spontaneous spur-of-the-moment ideas.
And I do my best to create space to help make them happen.

Whenever creativity knocks at your door, don’t knock it down.
Instead invite it in and let the magic happen!
(even if it pops up at the ‘wrong’ moments, like bedtime!).

Are you a creative couch potato?!?

Looking ahead to a fresh new week, I ask myself how I might solve the problems I'll inevitably encounter along the way...

Doing things the ‘tried & tested’ way is easy.
Copy, paste, copy, paste… and the job is done!

Doing things differently is harder.

Stepping out into uncharted territory requires more effort and an extra ounce of courage. But it often leads to better solutions in the long run.

Whenever I'm tempted to remain in the comfortable seat of my comfort zone, these are the sorts of questions I ask myself:

- What is my motivation for taking the road less travelled?
- What destinations might I reach if I discover an entirely new path?
- What fresh knowledge will I gain along the way?

Sometimes I choose to take the well-trodden path, and that's OK.
Repetition and certainty feels good.
Especially when it's conscious choice rather than a default action.

Happy Monday to you all!

I am FREE!! Do you want to marry me?!?

Today I celebrate my 1st anniversary of freedom...

On June 8th 2020, I finally closed the deal to buy out my business partner. More than 10 years of collaboration had sadly ended in a dispute we couldn't seem to resolve.

After 18 months of lawyer-led negotiations, each signature I wrote on the pages of the settlement agreement felt like a huge sigh of relief.

Plenty of corks popped that day!
And the joys of my newfound singledom lasted well into the summer.

But then the questions started to arise...
• What now? What next?
• Can I build this business by myself? And do I want to?
• Will I ever find another partner?
• And if I do, how can I trust my choice this time round?
• Will I trust them? Or will the ghosts of the past always linger?

Questions, questions, questions... all spinning around in my head. With no clear-cut answers.

Fortunately, the forced introspection of the Covid-months felt like a good time to mull things over. Let the thoughts marinate.

Today, a year on, I still don't have the answers...
The ONLY thing I know is that even when I feel alone, I'm not alone!

Thank you Mauro, Jacob, Lee, Gaal, Richard, Pani, Jindy, Nanna, Laura, Helen, Anita, Kamal, Jos, Nick, Sarah, Fabiana, Mariana, Ale and Rich - you are the real stars in this collaborative constellation that helps my business shine brightly!

PS: Could you be my new business partner? Or might you know any suitable suitors? Then send me a message or send them my way!
