Sometimes it can be hard seeing a light in the darkness. But no matter how bleak your situation seems right now, you can turn things around.

A perfect example of this is the story of the now billionaire entrepreneur John Paul DeJoria. He used to live on the streets and even picked up discarded bottles to cash in, because he was desperate to feed himself and his son.

He persisted in his entrepreneurial vision and eventually he founded John Paul Mitchell Systems with 700 dollars in startup cash which is now a billion-dollar business. And even more impressively, he co-founded PatrĂłn Tequila that was sold for 5.1 billion dollars in 2018.

So after all, following rules and staying inside the lines doesn't always make for business success. Instead it’s all about finding your own way!

CBS Climate Club

This week’s Startup of the Week is a student organisation with a matter of the utmost importance, as they are fighting for a greener life at CBS as well as aiming to encourage sustainable innovation and business strategies.

It is of course CBS Climate Club! Give them a follow and read what makes them so special as a startup!

What sets your startup apart from others?

We are a student organisation, so we are purely driven by amazing and passionate CBS students who participate and work voluntarily. I know most startups are started by people with a passion, but we do it without profitability as a goal. We are solely in it because we people in our vision and values.

What is your startup aiming to do better?

Overall, we are aiming at doing three things better: firstly, making CBS a greener university in very practical terms. Secondly, making CBS students more aware of what they personally can do to contribute to the mitigation of climate change. Thirdly, we aim to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable business – both in terms how important the adequate education is to do so, but also to show externally to large corporations that sustainability and climate change is a matter we as business students take seriously and expect them to do so as well.

Describe your team in three words

First, knowledgeable – all of our teammates are greatly concerned about climate change, but they also use a fair amount of time of researching and reading, and I am often surprised by how much all of them know!
Second, driven – we all work voluntarily, school and work often also have to be prioritised, and despite this, we have a driven team we believe in the course. A student organisation cannot function without this foundation.
Third, ambitious – we are all ambitious in terms of the changes needed to mitigate climate change. This is often much more ambitious than politicians and corporate leaders, which has created very interested discussions at our events.

Any exciting 2021 plans?

As everyone else, we hope that Covid-19 will soon let us have real events again. We have so many great ideas and things in the pipeline!

Looking to hire new members to your startup team?

Here's an excerpt from our latest blog on early startup hire:

"How much will a very skilled but lazy coder get done compared to a less experienced but passionate one?

What about a salesperson who gives up easily versus a salesperson with undaunted gusto and drive?

People might look great on paper and say all the right things in an interview, but it’s the person they are once they are in the startup environment that counts.

There’s no way around it, if you want to build a star startup team, you’ll need people that are fit for the startup life, not just professionals with relevant technical skills."

Meet our Head of Events, Peter. Peter is responsible for the detailed planning, with the purpose of creating the best possible conditions for bringing co-founders together!

📕What brought you to UniFounder?
I was taking electives in entrepreneurship and event management when I came across UniFounder, which immediately seemed like the perfect place for me to get some practical experience. I also saw it as a much needed challenge as I wanted a job with a bigger responsibility and potential impact, which is a big part of working in a startup. Last but not least, after having met the two great founders, Mikkel and Simon, I knew that it would be at least a fun journey to be a part of.

📗What are three words to describe your team?
Skilled, entertaining and ambitious

📘What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
I love the flexibility and opportunity to be a part of many different aspects of the business. As the pandemic has made it impossible to host physical events, my initial tasks were pretty much non-existing. Instead of just leaning back and waiting for the pandemic to end it has been a pleasure to be a part of the SoMe team, which has given me valuable insights in the importance of having a strong digital presence.

A new week is upon us which means that we are proud to announce the new Startup of the Week!

This week we have chosen Walk the Woof, who is a dog walking and training service based in copenhagen.

Check them out and keep reading for a short interview with the founder!

Who are the founders, and what sparked this idea for them?

I can’t exactly remember when dogs became such a big part of my life, but my earliest memories are me volunteering at dog shelters and walking my neighbours’ dogs to prove to my parents that I had what it takes to be a dog owner myself.
When I eventually got my first dog at the age of 11, it became clear that working with dogs was going to be more than just a hobby. For the past 7 years, I have been rehabilitating dogs and training humans, ranging from basic obedience in a Hungarian Vizsla to human aggression in a Saluki.
Inspired to establish Walk the Woof by my own three dogs, I bring a personal, professional & reliable service to the dog parents of Copenhagen, all while putting the safety, health and happiness of the pack first.”

What sets your start-up apart from others?

At Walk the Woof, each walk is spent favouring quality time with the dog. Therefore our group walks are never more than 5 dogs per walk. With a mix of off-leash playtime and on-leash heeling, our structured walks include basic obedience and recall practice.
As well as that, we will first offer a free behavioural consultation for help to address any behaviour and dog training issues, or a puppy consultation to ensure you start off on the right track.

What is your start-up aiming to change?

Our startup is aiming to better the lifestyle of people and their pooches. Every detail of our services have been manufactured with both two legs and four legs in mind. We are here to make both of your lives easier with our flexible services and affordable prices.

Describe your team in three words?

Uplifting, proactive and reliable!

Any exiting plans for 2021?

We are looking forward to seeing Walk the Woof grow all over Copenhagen, with numerous packs strutting the streets.

Across the world, women are making huge advances and contributions to economies, whether it’s on farms, in businesses, unpaid domestic work or as entrepreneurs.

According to Woetzel et al. (2015), a “full-potential” scenario—in which women participate in the economy identically to men — would contribute as much as $28 trillion, or 26 percent, to annual global GDP by 2025.

UniFounder strongly support this social development as we’ve created a platform where we encourage women to realise their big ideas.

Female entrepreneurship also makes a strong contribution to the economic well-being of the family and community, as well as to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We deeply believe anyone who is determined to advance and improve an economy through entrepreneurial activity cannot ignore the sheer social, economic and innovation potential of females in startups.

We are excited to present to you the latest initiative from Unifounder: Startup of the Week! 🚀

Every week we will announce a startup that we love as the “Startup of the Week” to give them a well-deserved boost together with a short Q&A with the founder in order for you to get to know them better.

To start things off, the very first Startup of the Week is EcoHotels.com who have created a responsible, low commission booking site for sustainable hotels!

đŸ”” Who are the founders, and what sparked this idea for them?

The founding members of EcoHotels all have experience working in the hotel industry. Our booking site stems from seeing the discrepancy between how booking-sites act towards hotels - and how we wished they would act. Most hotels are dependent on the significant booking-sites to get bookings. However, the bookings stemming from these sites usually include a 15-30 % commission, making it nearly impossible for hotels to be lucrative.

đŸ”” What sets your start-up apart from others?

Our motivation is not rooted in economic incentives, but an inherent belief that we could do better. I believe this is what sets us apart from others because we genuinely are a mission-driven start-up.

đŸ”” What is your start-up aiming to change?

Our start-up is rooted in a belief that tourism, one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing industries, could and should be a power for good. We have experienced that the traveller of the future is here, demanding responsibility and accountability from their hotels of choice. We strive to be a tool for the sustainability-conscious traveller, who values commitment and responsible actions, and make it easier for you to make the best and most sustainable choice.

đŸ”” Describe your team in three words?

Mission-driven, inspired and informal.

đŸ”” Any exciting plans for 2021?

We are aiming to scale our concept throughout Europe in summer of 2021. Keep up on our social media pages!

If you think your startup got what it takes to become the next to get a shoutout, feel free to contact us!
