What does the wound care journey look like from the patient's perspective?

An ahead-of-print article in the Journal of Wound Management explores the lived experiences of people with chronic, complex and non-healing wounds, revealing how delays, fragmented care pathways and poor communication can shape their healthcare journey. The study also highlights the importance of empathy, continuity of care and clear information in building trust and improving the patient experience.

The findings serve as a reminder that high-quality wound care is about more than clinical treatment alone.

EWMA just wrapped up three productive days of meetings in Amsterdam.

We brought together the EWMA Council, working groups and committees, conference partners, our Corporate A and B Sponsors, and key strategic partners to discuss current initiatives and future activities across the organisation.

Among many other things, we discussed the upcoming conferences in Helsinki (2027) and Amsterdam (2028), other educational activities, and upcoming EWMA campaigns including the EWMA Patient Voices initiative and the EWMA Compression Therapy Campaign. The EWMA Council evaluated project proposals submitted by members, national and international partner organisations, and industry sponsors. We received many strong proposals and were pleased to see such strong engagement from the wound care community.

During the sponsor meetings, EWMA and industry partners engaged in discussions on how we can work together to shape a shared research agenda, address key evidence gaps and drive innovation that ultimately benefits patients and clinical practice.

Finally, we also used the opportunity of being together to record new resources to be shared within the coming months. Stay tuned! 😎

🩹 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆: 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻-𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰, 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗴 𝘂𝗹𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀

A new study from Helsinki University Hospital describes 24 patients with livedoid vasculopathy (LV) and provides the first reported series of LV patients from the Nordic countries.

𝙆𝙚𝙮 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙙𝙚:

🔹Diagnosis was delayed by a mean of 8.3 years after symptom onset.

🔹62.5% of patients were women, with a median age of 53.5 years at diagnosis.

🔹57% of screened patients had prothrombotic or proinflammatory findings.

🔹Venous insufficiency, hypertension and deep vein thrombosis were among the most frequent comorbidities.

🔹Wound healing was often slow, with a median treatment duration of 11 months.

The findings highlight the importance of recognising livedoid vasculopathy as a potential cause of atypical and recurrent lower-leg ulcers.

EWMA was pleased to participate in the joint EPUAP–EWMA panel discussion at the EPUAP 2026 conference in Dublin. The session examined the opportunities and challenges of using AI in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers.

EWMA President Dimitri Beeckmann and EPUAP President Tom O’Connor moderated the discussion with panelists Andrea Pokorná and Paulo Alves. The session highlighted the need for collaboration across clinical practice, research and education: evaluating AI tools in real care settings, building reliable evidence and preparing healthcare professionals to use them critically and responsibly.

During the conference, the presidents of EWMA and EPUAP also met to discuss how to strengthen collaboration between the two organisations. We look forward to continuing this work together.
