The silage pile can look perfectly solid. Until it isn't.

A quiet silage face can still be a serious hazard.

Avalanches and cave-offs can happen without warning. That's why one of the most important rules during feedout is also one of the simplest: Give the pile space, for once.

↔️ Keep a safe distance from the face.
🚜 Don't park equipment directly in front of it.
📏 Build piles and bunkers within the safe working reach of your unloading equipment.
🥄 Need a sample? Bring the silage to you rather than unnecessarily approaching a tall face.

The pile deserves respect even when nothing appears to be happening.

Stay aware. Respect the pile. Look out for each other.

“I'll just do this quickly.”

It might be one of the most dangerous sentences of the silage season, especially towards the end of the season.

It's late. Everyone's tired. There's one last job to finish. Home is waiting.

That's when shortcuts can become tempting — and when the basics matter most.

Slow down. Check your surroundings. Communicate. Wear the right safety equipment. And look out for the person working beside you.

Because the strongest safety system on a farm may be the people looking out for each other.

A successful silage day isn't only about what goes into the bunker.

It's about everyone who goes home afterward.

Stay aware.
Respect the pile.
Look out for each other.

Silage season moves fast. Safety shouldn't get left behind.

Forage is finishing. Machines are moving. People are busy. And somehow, everything needs doing yesterday.

That's exactly when awareness matters most.

Around heavy equipment, seeing the machine doesn't necessarily mean the operator sees you. Blind spots, phones, fatigue and the pressure to keep things moving can turn an ordinary moment into a dangerous one.

So keep it simple:
👀 Eyes up.
🦺 Make yourself visible.
👋 Make contact with the operator.
⚠️ Never assume you've been seen.

Because during silage season, a few seconds saved are never worth someone's safety.

Stay aware. Respect the pile. Look out for each other.

When drought hits, treating your silage management the same as a "normal" year is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. 🌽

Drought changes everything—from kernel maturity and moisture content to how the crop behaves in the bunker. In a stress year, the goals shift. It's no longer about chasing a "perfect" silage (that ship has sailed), but about protecting every single kilogram of dry matter you have left.

The penalty for getting the fundamentals wrong—like packing density and moisture measurement—is much higher when yields are already down.
