Farmers in Egypt have boosted their efforts to plant orange trees, this is to meet global demand for the citrus fruit. Taking advantage of the climate in Egypt, which is conducive to growing orange trees.

Egypt increased the orange trees planted by 44 percent, or 1.05 million tons, during the past ten years, compared to 2.4 million tons recorded in 2009.

According to a marketing specialist for Egyptian fruit exporter:

"The Egyptian exporters will face a challenging season, made harder by the lack of trade fairs: “The Egyptian citrus season has just started and all farmers, packers and exporters are well prepared the best they can be. The coronavirus will cause a lot of challenges. There will be no traveling and thus no trade fairs, which is why all exporters must have a strategy to reach new customers.”

NEWS: Spanish citrus prices increased by 19% in 2020 compared to the last 5 seasons.

According to the latest Citrus Fruits Dashboard published by the European Commission's Price Observatory, the prices of Spanish citrus fruits (taking as a reference those coming out of stores) increased by an average of 59 euro per 100 kilograms (i.e. € 0.59 / kg) during 2020, which represents a 19% increase compared to the average of the last five seasons.

Citrus prices paid in other European Union producing countries, such as Italy (+ 24%), Portugal (+ 26%), and Greece (+ 27%), are somewhat higher than the Spanish average. However, one must take into account that these nations export and produce much less and set a higher price.
