Last week, the campaign – “More electricity from sun and wind for everyone” was launched in Sweden to support IKEA in selling renewable electricity to its customers.

GECO has been helping in shaping the purchasing strategy, which challenges the existing paradigms of purchasing and selling renewable electricity – the question has been: “How can the market mechanisms support investments in more renewable energy?”.

A strange question? What most people do not realize is, that today you can sell certificates for green electricity from another country – and thus claim, that your electricity is clean.

With IKEA STRÖMMA we are challenging this by insisting, that the electricity being procured and sold is based on local, Swedish production and that green certificates are both labelled Bra Miljöval and is coming from facilities not older than 5 years.

This will drive the market standards towards an actual increase in new renewable capacity building.

The Danish Energy Agency has launched a new tool that is to help us navigating prices and energy expenses. At first glance an easy-to-access tool to support informed decision-making when purchasing a new fridge, whether you are driven by economic or green ambitions.
However, working with behavioural design and end-user behaviour, a couple of questions comes to mind. When shopping for household appliances, so many other parameters influence the final decision, like size and colour and, not least, the context in which we do the actual shopping. How many of us have the mental bandwidth to navigate yet another app in a crowded store with a million impressions and decisions to make? Based on our experience, not many. – It becomes more of a judgement tool, than help to compare many energy parameters

Why not make it easy and relate it to the actual buying situation? For example by making it obligatory to label all electronic devices with the expenses throughout the expected lifetime. There is a purchasing price – and a running cost.

Then you could, just by looking at the price labels compare 400 Euro against 650 Euro, without having to get lost in yet another technological tool – it’s more nudging than judging…

Listening in to this mornings "What If Series: Virtual Keynote - What if the global pandemic accelerated the green transition?" at the Enlit Europe 2020.

Sad to see, that only 10% of the audience believe, that the current crisis can give more consumer engagement. It is in strong contradiction with our experience at GECO Global, that actually the situation could be a ledger for the industry to engage with customers - in fact right now they are all ears. But I am also afraid it will be a self fulfilling prophecy, if the common belief in the industry is, that in the current situation the most important thing is stimulus packages...
